Ben Richards, who formerly starred in The Bill as PC Nate Roberts – and in Footballers’ Wives as Bruno – has revealed that for five months, he ignored the warning signs that there was something badly wrong with him.
Ben, who has bowel cancer, told Hello! magazine that he only ended up going to his doctor about his symptoms – such as rectal bleeding and pain – when his wife Helen insisted he go.
He said of ignoring his worrying symptoms, “I was being a typical bloke.”
But of the shock of hearing that he had bowel cancer, Ben said, “It was like the wind had gone out of my sails, like someone had punched me.”
While Ben was hearing the terrible news, Helen was an another hospital where she was receiving infertility treatment.
Of hearing the news of Ben’s illness Helen said, “I said [to Ben], ‘If you don’t tell me I’m going to think it’s something really bad like cancer.’

39 year old actor Ben Richards, who starred in The Bill and Footballers’ Wives, has vowed that he’ll be cancer free in six months.
Ben broke the news that he has cancer – though he hasn’t revealed which type – via Twitter, where, he wrote, “After getting scariest news yesterday, I have to now postpone my LA adventure for at least six months.
“I was born a fighter and will fight this.”
He later added, “Great meeting with oncologist today, lovely guy, v positive, I was terrified he’d give me bad news.”
Ben and his wife Helen have already had more than their fair share of tragedy, having lost four babies due to a rare condition which causes stillbirth.

38 year old Ben will play role of Tick in the West End stage show of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The part is currently played by Jason Donovan, but Ben will take over later this year.
