ITV executive chairman, Michael Grade, has claimed that the channel is currently overstocked with too many shows.
Grade blamed the problem on the gap in time between ideas being greenlit and the completion of production, The Mirror reports.
Grade said: “Because of the lead times of programmes, someone walking in with an idea then actually delivering the film can sometimes be three years, then we may not transmit it for another year.
Arlene Phillips has spoken out saying that there is still life in ITV’s Britannia High, despite rumours that the show has been cancelled.
The Strictly Come Dancing judge told ITN: “I think there’s life in Britannia High yet and obviously Gary’s just had a baby girl and so we’re getting together.
“I think we’ll wait and see what happens. I don’t think it’s done and dusted.”
ITV1 teen musical drama, Britannia High has been cancelled after just one series.
“We thought Britannia High would be an all-singing, all-dancing success – especially having the top names in dance and music on board,” a source told The Sun.
“Sadly, the stories of these youngsters vying for their dreams didn’t seem to capture viewers’ imagination.

Britannia High looks like it’s going to be a flop as viewing figures are down by 1.6 million viewers.
The third episode of the show averaged just 2.5 million viewers, which is significantly down on the 4.1 million viewers it recorded after Lewis Hamilton’s F1 win last week, and the recent viewing figures are even down even on the show’s 3.3m debut figures.
Meanwhile, BBC1’s Antiques Roadshow averaged 8.6 million viewers and the Strictly Come Dancing results show managed 8.7 million on average with a peak of over 9.6 million.

It’s Jez’s (Matthew James Thomas) birthday and the gang are celebrating at a roller disco. He’s having a great time until he bumps into some old friends and suddenly becomes uneasy. He clearly doesn’t want his two sets of friends to meet and as he pretends he’s alone a farce ensues as he tries to keep both groups apart. Jez thinks he might just have got away until disaster strikes and he’s eventually caught out.

I actually missed the launch of ITV1’s newest musical drama, Britannia High on Sunday evening but after reading a few stories today claiming that it got off to a poor start, ratings wise, I played it back tonight to see why the anti-climax occured.
The show was hyped before launch, some would say over-hyped, but I actually thought the show lived up to my expectations. I was drawn in from the start by the catchy music, courtesy of Gary Barlow, and by the story of Lauren the underdog.

It’s the start of a new year at Britannia High and the students arrive with bags of energy and enthusiasm, full of anticipation about what lies ahead. Amongst the new arrivals is small-town girl and performing arts school novice Lauren (Georgina Hagen). After the initial excitement of being in the big city wears off, she gradually begins to feel like a fish out of water as she struggles to fit in with the uber-confident and trendy city kids.
The coming week in tellyland sees the start of several new and much touted series but personally, I cannot wait for the new mini-series Dead Set to start next Monday 27th on E4 at 10pm. To be honest, I think this could be better than the actual Big Brother! Here’s a bit of info about the show in case you’ve been on Mars lately and haven’t seen the trailers and teasers…
‘Britain has a big problem. The dead are returning to life and attacking the living. The people they kill get up and kill – and it’s spreading like wildfire. Curiously, there are a few people left in Britain who aren’t worried about any of this – that’s because they’re the remaining contestants in Big Brother. Cocooned in the safety of the Big Brother house, they’re blissfully unaware of the horrific events unfolding outside. Until an eviction night when all hell breaks loose.
Former X Factor runner up, Ray Quinn, was turned down for a role on new ITV drama, Britannia High because his dancing was not up to scratch.
Ray turned up at an open audition in London earlier this year to try out for one of the nine lead roles, but didn’t make the grade according to a show insider.
A spokeswoman for ITV1 told The Sun last night: “He didn’t get picked – his singing was probably impressive, but I’m not so sure about his dancing.”

Arlene Phillips has revealed that there is no other musical quite like Britannia High and compares it to High School Musical and Fame.
At the press launch of the show Arlene stated:
“Britannia High is a musical drama like no other,” she said of the forthcoming TV series, which she created.
“I guess it sits somewhere between High School Musical and Fame. It’s about 16 to 18 [year-olds], and it’s set in a high school of performing arts, and the pupils in this high school are already talented, they can already sing, dance, act to get through into the school.
“The musical numbers are shot in a way like video promos. They’re really exciting. And the stories are quite gripping.” Read more & comment »
