When the schedules for Christmas Day programming on the BBC and ITV were first revealed, top dramas Dowton Abbey and Call the Midwife were to overlap by fifteen minutes…
However, in what was termed “a Christmas present to viewers”, ITV rescheduled Downton’s festive episode so that viewers could watch it and Call the Midwife without any clash.
But today it’s been reported that BBC bosses are “livid” that now, ITV has yet again altered the timeslot for Downton Abbey so that it does now clash with Call the Midwife.
The Daily Star reports, “The BBC’s top brass eventually moved their pride and joy to 7.30pm after ITV said it wanted their Downton Abbey special to begin at 8.45pm instead of 9pm as originally planned.”
A BBC source said, “ITV always said they were putting Downton on at 9pm so we went earlier, avoiding a clash… Read more & comment »

There’s great news from both the BBC and ITV today as not only has Aunty Beeb released new images and clips for the forthcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, but the corporation has also agreed with ITV to avoid the channels’ top festive offerings, Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife, from clashing in the Christmas Day schedules!
Starting with the new images and clips for Doctor Who’s ‘The Snowmen’ Christmas special, the first image released above shows a close-up of the scary snowmen, while others – which you can see after the jump – feature the episode’s villains and of course, Matt Smith and Jenna Louis Coleman as the Doctor and his new sidekick, Clara Oswin.

The BBC have today announced the line-up of top shows that will air on Christmas Day, and they include the Doctor Who special – which of course introduces Jenna Louise Coleman as the Doctor’s new companion – and a festive special edition of Call the Midwife.
We’re also to be treated to ‘Up’, which is Pixar’s Oscar-winning movie animation about an old man who floats off on a balloon and encounters any number of adventures. The BBC will also air Disney’s family film Tangled and The Princess and the Frog on Christmas Day.
And of course, there will be the traditional visits to EastEnders, where yuletide misery is sure to reign, and in addition, The Royle Family Christmas special that was postponed last year will dominate the primetime timeslot.
As fans of the hit sitcom may recall, writers Craig Cash and Caroline Aherne failed to deliver the script to the BBC in time to have the festive episode filmed. And of course, this year, they’ll be writing out Geoffrey Hughes – who played Twiggy – who sadly passed away earlier this year… Read more & comment »
It’s been revealed today that BBC dramas Jonathan Creek and Call the Midwife will air Christmas specials this year.
What’s On TV report that in Call the Midwife, Benidorm star Sheila Reid – who plays mobility scooter rider Madge – will guest star in the special episode as “a sad person who has had quite a difficult life.”
Of her role, Sheila added, “I am going to play someone very different to Madge on telly in the Christmas special of Call The Midwife.
“She’s quite a sad person who has had quite a difficult life – she’s at the bottom of the heap.
”So that’s a lovely contrast because there’s no swearing, no fake tan and no mobility scooters!”
Meanwhile, The British Comedy Guide have announced that Jonathan Creek – which of course stars Alan Davies – will also be airing a festive special… Read more & comment »
Fans of hit drama Call the Midwife will doubtless be pleased to hear that the show’s bosses have a Christmas special lined up this year.
The show proved such a hit on the BBC that after just two episodes of series one airing, the corporation bosses ordered a second series, and that’s set to air early in 2013.
Ben Stephenson, the controller of drama at BBC1 said of the yuletide offering, “Following its huge success, we simply couldn’t resist treating audiences to a Call the Midwife special this year.
