Call the Midwife final review: Chummy & Sister Bernadette’s lives change forever – Jenny meets a new beau

Call-the-Midwife-007

So we come to an end of the second successful series of Call the Midwife which to me has been a lot darker than its predecessor. We’ve seen domestic violence, backstreet abortion and disabled children while the lack of Miranda Hart’s Chummy has meant a cutback on comedy subplots. Though Chummy returned last week her scenes were kept to a minimum but we knew that her pregnancy would take centre stage in this final episode.

Call the Midwife review: Warren Clarke joins the racially themed episode & Miranda Hart’s Chummy’s back!

call the midwife 3

The one thing I have enjoyed about this series of Call the Midwife is that it has had a much more serious tone thanks in part to the absence of Miranda Hart as Chummy whose comic interludes never really did anything for me. Knowing that the character would return this week filled me with trepidation as I thought this episode would suffer as a result thankfully though Hart’s appearances were kept to a minimum allowing the other stories to thrive.

Call The Midwife: Miranda Hart is loving being pregnant and can’t stop rubbing Chummy’s bump!

Call The Midwife star, Miranda Hart, has revealed that she is thoroughly thrilled that her character, Chummy Cholmodeley-Browne – now Mrs Noakes, is expecting a baby on the hit BBC drama.

As we reported earlier this week how, when Chummy and her new husband PC Noakes (Ben Caplin) return from missionary work this weekend, the larger than life midwife will be sporting a baby bump of her own.

This surprise storyline was meant to have been kept under-wraps but Miranda, who is also the star of her own comedy show Miranda, was so excited she has found it hard to keep the details to herself.

Call the Midwife: A tuberculosis epidemic hits Poplar while Jenny tries to reunite a dying father with his pregnant daughter

call the midwife

For the majority of us this series of Call the Midwife has been all about the brewing attraction between Dr Turner and Sister Bernadette as well as the latter’s questioning of her faith. This slow-burning storyline really started during the Christmas special and built up to last week’s scene in which he kissed her hand before she pulled away. This week sees a TB epidemic hit Poplar which draws the two together once again as they fight to have a new X-Ray machine bought to their area.

Call the Midwife Episode Five: Sharon Small puts in a heart-breaking performance as a put-upon mother

Call_the_Midwife_series_two__episode_five___preview_pictures_and_predictions

Over the past few weeks in my Call the Midwife reviews I’ve commented on how much better I think the series has got and that continues tonight in an extremely gritty episode focusing on a mum of eight played by Sharon Small. Some of you have also picked up on the fact that I’m occasionally over-critical of the programme however at the end of tonight’s instalment I had to admit that I had formed an emotional attachment to at least a few of the characters.

Call the Midwife Episode Four: Jenny Lee is shaken by a difficult birth while Sister Bernadette plays matchmaker in an episode in which Jason Watkins and Dorothy Atkinson shine

miranda hart, chummy, call the midwife

Last week I claimed that Miranda Hart’s temporary absence had caused a rise in quality in the new series of Call the Midwife and I still stick by that theory despite some of you being very fond of Chummy. A case in point is this week’s episode in which Chummy’s replacement, medical orderly Jane Sutton, is given more prominence as we learn why this woman is afraid to speak to people and how she came to be appointed in the first place. The shame is that Jane’s storyline is treated like the subplot as Jenny Lee is back on her rounds and delivering babies and home truths to the women of Poplar.

Call The Midwife bosses may write out Miranda Hart as filming of series four clashes with her comedy tour!

miranda hart, chummy, call the midwife

There’s potentially bad news for fans of Call the Midwife as it’s been reported that Miranda Hart, who of course plays the role of posh medic Chummy, may have to be written out of series four.

That’s because the filming schedule for new series would clash with her upcoming comedy tour in 2014.

A show insider told the Daily Mirror, “She’ll be fine for filming this year but there is a huge question mark hanging over anything beyond that.

“Next year is all about the stand-up tour.” Read more & comment »
