It’s a strange phenomenon the medical drama because as a genre, it’s one of the most successful and popular types of show you can get. If you’ve got blood, guts and medical staff, chances are you’ve got yourself a hit series.

Emergency Ward 10
Since TV began there’s been show after show based in either hospitals or Doctor’s surgeries. One of the earliest of these to be shown on UK television was Emergency Ward 10 which first aired in 1957 and ran for ten years. Set in the fictitious Oxbridge General Hospital, the show focused on the lives and loves of the medical staff and the pressure of their work, as well as the patient’s stories, and it’s a format that was to provide the blueprint for hundreds of other shows.

The concluding episode of this two-part special opened with Mac talking to Alistair, the documentary cameraman, about his work at Holby. This was a flashback to events before the fire and subsequent drama in yesterday’s episode.
Back in the present, Jeff was being interviewed by the police after the accident in which Dixie was driving the ambulance that ran into Sammy. On the estate meanwhile, word had rapidly spread that Sammy was at death’s door because she’d been hit by an ambulance and unrest quickly escalated. Some of the estate’s residents started throwing missiles at the police and paramedics and soon, cars were on fire and chaos ensued. Read more & comment »

As we rejoined the staff at Holby City in last night’s Casualty, we first saw Charlie both praising and bemoaning the state of the NHS to a documentary film crew who are documenting life in the emergency department.
As Charlie was talking to camera, we got flashes of footage from the main storyline which started with two teenage girls bullying and thumping another young girl who then ran away from them.
Meanwhile, Adam sought Alice’s advice as to how he could win over Jessica but Alice cautioned that he needed to be aware of how fragile Jessica is and that she doesn’t need ‘rescuing’ from one bad relationship only to find herself in another. Next, Charlie informed Adam that Zoe was in a meeting with the Director of Critical Care and that her demotion is definitely going ahead. Charlie told Adam that this meant the Clinical Lead job is still open but Adam didn’t seem too keen. Read more & comment »

Plunging viewers into London’s East End, Casualty 1907 delivers a gritty, realistic experience of life just over a century ago in Whitechapel. This was a time when the average person lived to be 45 years old and one in five children died by the age of 10. Then, as now, the Royal London was the most advanced emergency hospital in Britain, but with antibiotics and public funding from the NHS still 40 years away, life was tough.
In Casualty 1907, the streets are teeming with trouble and gangland rivalry is rife. One of the first people to stagger through the doors is the leader of the Blind Beggar Gang, Nobby Clark, who has a bullet wound. Under the watchful eye of Matron Eva Luckes, Nurse Ada Russell has to deal with a team of probationary nurses while facing the painful dilemma of taking the job of Ward Sister, even though it threatens to ruin her engagement to Dr James Walton.
