Christopher Eccleston will not appear in the celebratory 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who later this year.

Iconic and legendary British actor, Bill Nighy, has confirmed he turned down the chance to star in Doctor Who.
Back in 2005 in the lead up to the Russell T.Davies revival of the epic sci-fi show, the rumour mill went into overdrive trying discover which star would be land the leading Time Lord Role, with Bill Nighy’s being top of the list, with several media sources even claiming that he had already been cast.

Early this morning, Doctor Who star Matt Smith revealed via Twitter that he’s to run a mile through Cardiff with the Olympic Torch this Saturday.
He tweeted, “To carry the Torch is an honour, one I thought I’d never get. I’m very excited!”
Matt’s taking time out from filming the latest series of Doctor Who to run with the torch, and of course, the forthcoming seventh series is to be the last featuring Amy Pond and Rory Williams, who are played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill respectively.
And apropos of departures from the show, fans will surely recall that Christopher Eccleston played the role of the Time Lord for just one series, and though he’s never fully explained why he left, he intimated it was to do with backstage disagreements… Read more & comment »

One of the big dramas premiering on BBC this Christmas is it’s adaptation of Mary Norton’s series of children’s novels, The Borrowers.
The drama will feature an all star cast, including ‘Misfits’ actor Robert Sheehan, ‘Dive’ star Aisling Loftus, ‘Doctor Who’ actor Christopher Eccleston, Irish comedienne Sharon Horgan, Exile star Shaun Dooley, stand-up comedienne Victoria Wood and of course the infamous Stephen Fry.

The BBC have today announced that they’ve lined up a star studded treat for us this Christmas, and have cast Stephen Fry, Victoria Wood, Christopher Eccleston, Sharon Horgan, Robert Sheehan and Aisling Loftus in a new adaptation of The Borrowers.
Set to be a 90 minute film, the story – which is an adaptation of Mary Norton’s original novels – will tell the story of Arrietty Clock (who’ll be played by Loftus) as a feisty teenaged Borrower who wants to explore the world beyond her hidden home.
However, her mum and dad, Pod and Homily Clock – who are played by Eccleston and Horgan respectively – are terrified of the world that’s above the floorboards, and especially of the ‘Human Beans’ who live there.
But when Arrietty makes friends with human James (Shaun Dooley) the lives of the Borrowers will change forever… Read more & comment »

Dervla Kirwan (Injustice, The Silence) and Ewen Bremner (Page Eight, Perfect Sense) join Christopher Eccleston in this original four-part drama for BBC One, written by Bill Gallagher (Lark Rise To Candleford, The Prisoner) and produced by Red Production Company (Exile, Single Father).
Also confirmed are Andrew Scott (The Hour, Sherlock), Lyndsey Marshal (Garrow’s Law, Being Human), Rebecca Callard (32 Brinkburn Street, Robin Hood), MyAnna Buring (The Twilight Saga, Any Human Heart) and Branka Katic (The Jury II, Big Love).

Matt Smith has admitted that he would love to see some old faces back on a new series of Doctor Who.
The British actor, who plays the titular Time Lord, has revealed that he would be delighted if bosses could get some of the men who formerly took on the role to return for special guest appearances.
Singling out Tom Baker – who played the Doctor from 1974 to 1981 – and Paul McGann who took on the role in the 1996 TV movie, Matt told The Sun:

Christopher Eccleston has been shedding more light on why he decided to star in Doctor Who for only one series.
The British actor took on the title role in the BBC sci-fi show in 2005 and at the time, became the first actor to play the Time Lord, who was born after the series began, albeit by less than three months.
However, despite the huge success of the revamped series, Eccleston stepped down after only one run and explaining his decision this week, he reportedly told students at an acting masterclass:

Game Of Thrones is going to need a new star now that Sean Bean has departed and it seems that bosses thinks Christopher Eccleston may be just the man.
Den of Geeks is reporting that the former Doctor Who star is being considered to play one of the leading characters in the upcoming second season and we think he’d be a fabulous addition to the show.

Christopher Eccleston has insisted that he will never return to Doctor Who but admitted that he is very proud of the work he did on the show.
The 47 year old star played the role of The Doctor in the 2005 series of the sci-fi hit, when the format was regenerated if you will, by Russell T Davies for the BBC.
Chris had previously worked with Davies on ITV drama The Second Coming and in an interview with Graham Norton admitted that when he heard who was writing the new series about the famous timelord, he chased the job until he was cast in the lead role.
