Spoiler Alert! Who Won What at the British Soap Awards

The British Soap Awards logo

The BSA took place this Saturday and we have news about who won what in the soaps that we cover here on Primetime, but as coverage of the show isn’t actually being aired until Wednesday, if you don’t want to know who got what award, don’t read on after the ‘Read more and comment’ link…

And it turned out that Phil Schofield hosted she show alone after Fern Britton pulled out citing a “family commitment” as the reason, but as she announced this just two days after her resignation from This Morning was publicised, it added fuel to the fire that there’s a rift between the pair, even though they’ve both denied it repeatedly.

However, on the 27th March, The Sun ran an article regarding Fern dropping both This Morning and the BSA… here’s part of their article.

“Fern is thought to have been on about £20,000 for hosting the show — with Phillip, 46, on TWICE as much.

Insiders said ‘no one was surprised’ at her pull-out.

One said: ‘Would you want to stand next to someone when they’re getting paid twice as much?’

But Fern insisted she had made the decision because of a prior family engagement.”

So, with the thick plottening on that one, the awards went ahead anyway, and here’s who won what from the soaps… remember, don’t read on if you don’t want to know! Read more & comment »

Review – Corrie event of the year: Steve & Becky’s non-wedding day!

coronation street steve and becky's wedding
Well, Steve and Becky are – in my opinion – the most unlikely Corrie couple ever and I believe the Street’s writers intend for them to be the new Jack and Vera, and judging by the upcock that was their wedding last night, it’s looking like a) Friday the 13th lived up to its reputation and b) just like Jack and V, nothing’s ever going to go right for the pair!

Good old Hales came up trumps with the “dream dress” though – Becky’s dream dress that is, which is a dream shared only by Barbie I suspect – and resplendent with tiara and pink hair extensions, Becky looked like every Disney fairytale princess just exploded on her, which it seems, is exactly what she wanted!

As Hayley put it, “You look like something out of a fairytale” but she failed to mention which one… I’m going with anything from the brothers Grimm. Poor Becky, but how the wardrobe department must love her character! Imagine their excitement given that their usual remit is which anorak Blanche is going to wear that day or whether Norris should don a new cardi… I bet they had a ball with Becky’s dress! Our favourite ITV shows ‘under threat’… What’s your opinion?

michael-grade

As you’ve probably heard, the Chief of ITV, Michael Grade, announced yesterday that more than 600 jobs would be cut across the ITV owned network and group of companies. He also announced that following a 41% drop in revenue from advertising, the company had to make radical cutbacks.

Mr Grade was quoted in The Sun yesterday as saying, “Current conditions in the advertising market are the most challenging I have experienced in over 30 years in UK broadcasting.

“This is reflected both in our financial results for 2008 and the tough actions we are announcing today”.

Apparently a large part of ITV’s planned savings will be via cuts to its £1 billion programming budget, which will be reduced by £65 million during this year… Read more & comment »

Valentine’s Day Special: The best soap weddings

valentines

As it is of course Valentine’s Day, we thought we’d take a look at some of the best soap weddings, many of which have been set on this special day, but even if they weren’t, weddings are so romantic – unless they end like many soapy weddings in fights, tears, bloodshed and even deaths – they deserve a special mention on Valentine’s Day!

So let’s start with some of EastEnders most romantic weddings and one of my very favourite weddings was that of Kat and Alfie… Read more & comment »

Celebrity folks who’ve made cameo appearances in our soaps

Prince Charles in Corrie

Prince Charles in Corrie

With the arrival of internationally famous actress Amanda Donahue in Emmerdale, we thought we’d take a look at which other famous actors and actresses have made appearances in the soaps. Granted, Amanda seems to be in it as a regular now, but you might be surprised to see which famous faces have made brief appearances in the soaps!

For instance, one of the most surprising very famous cameo appearances was by Prince Charles on Coronation Street. The Prince made his guest appearance in what the show’s producers described as “a near flawless” live episode of the Street which was part of the programme’s 40th anniversary celebrations. On Monday in the 7:30pm episode, it’s finally the day of Molly and Tyrone’s wedding and everyone’s feeling the strain. Molly won’t let Pam leave her side because she’s so nervous and she’s oblivious to Pam’s unease about getting Tyrone involved in her latest scam.

Tyrone meanwhile isn’t having a good day; first, he gets a call from the dove agency to say the doves have had a nasty accident and then the harpist gets stuck in a traffic jam. But these hitches seem minor when he turns up for the handover of the sunglasses – only to find he’s face to face with a copper… Read more & comment »

Corrie actor Kenneth Cope was told he was dying

Kenneth Cope

Coronation Street star Kenneth Cope – who plays Jed Stone – has revealed to the News of the World that he spent six years believing he was going to die of cancer after being incorrectly diagnosed with the disease.

Kenneth, who’s 77, was told by specialists at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford that he had mesothelioma, a cancer that is almost always caused by contact with asbestos. He was referred to the hospital eight years ago after experiencing severe chest pain and shortness of breath.

In 2005, Kenneth was sent to more specialists in Liverpool in who, a year later, told him the diagnosis of mesothelioma was wrong and he actually had the lung condition chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which, though serious, isn’t necessarily fatal and isn’t a cancer.

Cope told the newspaper: “For six years I lived under a false death sentence. Read more & comment »

Corrie old timers won’t be leaving

Betty Driver

Coronation Street’s bosses have denied speculation that three of the show’s oldest cast members are being forced out of the show.

It’s been reported in various media that Betty Driver, Eileen Derbyshire and Barbara Knox – Betty, Emily and Rita – could get the boot early this year but an unnamed Corrie spokesman has emphatically denied it.

He also said that all three actresses “have some big storylines lined up this year.”

Let’s hope they don’t involve their deaths then… Read more & comment »
