Starring a charismatic cast of next generation British talent, Misfits blazed on to E4 earlier this year and rapidly became one of the most talked about television drama series this Autumn. Hailed by The Telegraph as a ‘British horror comedy to rival Shaun of the Dead’ and “brilliant, sharp and funny” by the Guardian the series so far series has averaged over 1m views per episode, across E4 and 4oD.

When local teenagers stop getting drunk, taking drugs and having sex, the friends realise something strange is happening. After investigating a mysterious organisation called Virtue, it soon emerges the outfit is not as pure as it may seem, leaving Nathan to save the day.
This new US series seems to be modelled on any number of pre-defined formulas which, taken individually and using the best examples, worked well.
To wit, Fame, Not Another Teen Movie, High School the Musical… the list goes on and on, and as a p-take of those shows, it didn’t do too badly. But as a separate entity with its own identity, it failed miserably.
There were without doubt some funny moments, but overall, the feeling I was left with at the end was that it was trying too hard to be funny. And not just funny, but quirky too. Quirky funniness is an elusive thing; shows like The Young Ones had it, and shows like Glee want to have it, but whatever it was that worked in The Young Ones doesn’t work here. Read more & comment »
So we watched Glee tonight and this is one show that had us hooked after a mere five minutes. The best way to describe it is as a cross between comedy teen movie American Pie and the Disney phenomenon High School Musical. It’s funny but not sickeningly sweet and it has fab and glitzy musical numbers, what more could a girl want?
This fascinating documentary took us behind the scenes of Sam Taylor-Wood’s extraordinary film about John Lennon’s early years. That time before he became an icon and someone for whom fame would ultimately bring death.
The film was the finale piece of the London Film Festival earlier this year and it’s received rave reviews, not least for resisting the urge to hark back to what we already know of John and his Beatles fame.
In fact, in the film itself, the only allusion to the Beatles is in the opening music; the first few seconds is carried with the famous opening chords of A Hard Day’s Night. Read more & comment »

Five youngsters gain superpowers when they are caught in a storm while doing community service. Kelly gains the ability to hear peoples’ thoughts, Simon turns invisible whenever he is ignored, and those who touch the beautiful Alisha fall in lust with her. Comedy drama, starring Lauren Socha, Nathan Stewart Jarrett, Iwan Rheon, Antonia Thomas and Robert Sheehan.
School Of Comedy is a unique sketch show where kids take on the world of adults and stars Jack Harries and Son Of Rambow’s Will Poulter plus a host of young, rising British stars.
Episode 1 features Connie, who runs a pub where it’s always last orders (and no, you can’t bring your kids in); Karl and Marv, Hollywood pitch men who make absolutely no sense at all and The Cabbie, who has absolutely no idea where he’s going, doesn’t have change, but has an amazing Jimmy Saville story.

E4 have bought the rights to air musical comedy series Glee. The Ryan Murphy-created show will launch in 2010.
“The buzz around Glee has been almost as big as its musical numbers,” said Channel 4’s head of acquisitions Gill Hay. “This huge, glossy, all singing, all dancing musical comedy drama series does precisely what it says on the tin.
“It’s the first of its kind on E4 and we are sure the E4 audience will be thoroughly entertained by its fun show-stopping exuberance when it arrives on the channel next year.”
If there was entertainment to be had in Running In Heels, I’m afraid I missed it. Likewise, I missed any hint of a new concept; it’s just yet another show of The Apprentice ilk, or even Jade’s PA, or in the really worst case scenario, Paris Hilton’s Best Friend bilge. And having watched episodes two and three last night, I’m afraid it definitely fell into the latter category.
Joanna Coles is editor-in-chief of Marie Claire in New York and as such, commands – apparently – much the same worship as God, but she has infinitely more clothes; up to five different outfits on any given day actually, according to the lady herself. She therefore has someone who attends to that for her and makes sure she has all the power outfits she needs to hand.
How nice for her. As a lowly TV critic, I must choose my own clothes and have nobody to hand to find my underwear for me, which, to be honest, sucks. Read more & comment »
C21 Media reports that digital TV channel E4 has acquired the rights to How I Met Your Mother and Being Erica.
After all the hype and high profile cameos, I am glad that we will finally get a chance to check out HIMYM. However you will have to wait until the third season to see Britney Spears famous appearance as a crazy receptionist with revenge on her mind.
Exams are looming, and Will is getting stressed. Jay has got other things on his mind, while Simon at last seems to be making some headway with Carli, helping her revise (albeit at the expense of his own revision). Looking back on the year, the boys realise that things haven’t been all bad, but that if they had their time again Jay would be less sensitive (yes, sensitive), Simon would take Carli’s word with a pinch of salt, Will would drink a lot less energy drinks and Neil would remember his kit for his PE exam.
