New Videos from Foxes Live: Wild in the City – Channel 4

Clare, the vixen in the Laindon Den, brings back a bird for her cubs, but it might not be quite as dead as she’d hoped.

Channel 4′s Foxes Live have placed hidden cameras in fox dens across the country, including this one in Laindon, Surrey. They will be bringing you highlights from all the dens on their website and from 30th April we’ll be streaming footage from the dens live so you can keep up with the cubs around the clock.

Foxes Live: Wild in the City is a brand new live interactive natural history event carrying out the biggest ever nationwide study into urban foxes in the UK.

Using cutting-edge technology, this ambitious project will assemble footage from state-of-the-art tracking technology, camera rigs and user-generated content to provide a fox-eye view of our cities. Every move will be followed with the help of CCTV cameras, GPS tags and mini fox cams that will follow the foxes’ movements; from under garden sheds where they sleep to the industrial estates where they mate.

Chris Packham says Britons have an “only when it suits us” attitude to nature

Outspoken TV presenter Chris Packham has told the Radio Times that as a nation, we tend to only appreciate nature “at arm’s length” and that we have an “only when it suits us” attitude towards conservation.

In addition, Chris, who presents Channel 4 show Foxes Live: Wild in the City, claimed that some of the alarming stories about urban foxes attacking humans are nothing more than urban myths. And I have to say, I agree with him…

Having been brought up in the countryside, I have a healthy respect for wildlife, and one thing that I’ve found to be something of a general rule about that wildlife is that they’ll do pretty much whatever it takes to avoid humans, because we are, shamefully, a threat to them.

One of my favourite things to do as a child, and later as an adult even more so, was watch from a distance the nocturnal activities of foxes, badgers and even hedgehogs, who were only brave enough to venture near humankind if food was on offer and under cover of darkness… Read more & comment »
