After the excitement at the end of the first series that a second series had been commissioned, we have now been told that we will have to wait 18 months, at least, before The Fall returns to our screens!
The Fall, which followed the story of DS Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) as she attempted to track down Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan), Belfast’s first ever serial killer, who is described as hiding in plain sight.

There was a large amount of criticism when BBC2 announced that The Fall was coming back for a second series. While the serial killer saga has become one of BBC2′s most-watched dramas of all time, the channel could’ve waited till the series had ended before announcing its return. So, coming into this final episode, there was a good chance that we wouldn’t get the final resolution we were hoping for. While I’ll try to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible, if you haven’t watched the episode yet I’d advise you not to read on for now.

After the phenomenal success of its opening episode, BBC2 thriller murder mystery The Fall shocked ratings nerds by dropping over quarter of a million viewers in the episodes that followed, but happily it has been revealed that they have all come back!
According to overnight figures The Fall, which stars Gillian Anderson as DSI Stella Gibson who has been sent to Belfast to help track down the city’s first ever serial killer, brought it’s figures back up to 3.24million (14.2%)viewers on Monday night after losing the viewing battle against Britain’s Got Talent the week before.

Those of you who read my reviews of The Fall know that I’m never quite sure what to make of the serial killer drama, which I feel affects my enjoyment of it to an extent. This episode once again proves that the issue with the programme is its pacing, as I personally feel that it drags whenever serial killer Paul Spector is on screen by himself. Luckily, this episode gave Paul to do than just moodily stalk around as his unprofessionalism was highlighted by his colleagues, but once again Paul got the upper hand. Meanwhile Stella has a lot on her plate because, as the serial killer investigation continues, she finds herself picking up the pieces of the police corruption case.

With the whole nation, it would seem, gripped on the current BBC2 murder drama The Fall, one of its main stars, Jamie Dornan, has revealed that he believes his modelling career has held him back!
The Fall, which was recommissioned for a second series last week on the back of the success of its first two episodes, tells the story of Belfast’s first ever serial killer, Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan), hidden in plain sight from the detective Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) who is trying to track him down.

After three episodes of The Fall, I still don’t quite know what to make of it. On the whole, I’m really enjoying it, but there are occasional scenes that I don’t care for at all. I feel that the inconsistency comes from the two stories in which we follow brilliant DSI Stella Gibson and deranged serial killer Paul Spector. While Gibson is absolutely fantastic, I still find myself disengaged with the drama whenever Spector is on screen. This may be because I prefer likeable characters, but it’s mainly due to the fact that I can only watch so many scenes of a psychopath stalking around various abandoned buildings.

One of my main criticisms of last week’s episode of The Fall was that I didn’t really get to connect with either of the central characters. However, this second instalment opened things up a bit more as we got to know a few more of the minor characters a little bit more. In addition a couple of subplots have been set up to run alongside Stella’s investigation into Paul Spector’s murder spree, namely one concerning corruption in the Belfast Police Force.

Anybody who’s accustomed to TV murder mystery dramas knows that we never really meet the killer until the last episode. For example, part of the success of the excellent Broadchurch was that everybody could have go at guessing who the killer was. But at the same time, some crime dramas suffer from the fact that the killer’s motivation is never explored in great detail. That’s definitely not the case with The Fall, in which the killer is literally unmasked within the first five minutes of the drama. The rest of the series then looks like it will play out as a cat and mouse drama with a brilliant DCI brought in to review the case of one of the murderer’s previous victims.
