Eric Dane has confirmed that he is leaving Grey’s Anatomy.

The 39 year old actor has been starring in the ABC medical drama for the last six years, after joining the show as Dr. Mark Sloan. The handsome star was quickly nicknamed McSteamy, due to his rugged good looks and became a fan favourite almost instantly.

However things looked bleak for the plastic surgeon when his soul mate and on off girlfriend Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) died in the season eight finale earlier this year, after she and a number of the other major characters were involved in a plane crash.

Grey’s Anatomy is coming to the end of it’s current season and in typical form, it seems like their series finale is going to be non stop drama.

The last episode in the current run will finally put an end to all the rumours about who is returning – and who isn’t – in the next season, after Mark, Lexie, Meredith, Cristina, Derek and Arizona are all caught up in a plane crash.

There has been no official confirmation that Grey’s Anatomy is returning for a ninth season and we have to admit, we were getting slightly worried by rumours that some of the show’s biggest stars were considering jumping ship at the end of the current run.

However, Deadline today reports that all our favourites will be back for another series next year, claiming that Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson have all inked new deals which will see them not only starring in one upcoming run, but will also have them re-upped for two more years. So we may even get a season ten out of them!

It time for the residents to take their boards on the upcoming episode of Grey’s Anatomy and it seems that it won’t be an easy task for any one of the five doctors.

Meredith, Cristina, Jackson, Alex and April are all in the spotlight during the installment titled “Let the Bad Times Roll,” and we are informed at the end of the clip that at least one of them failed the exam, setting viewers up perfectly for the possible departure of a major character, going into season nine.

Season eight of Grey’s Anatomy is drawing to a close and it has been confirmed that in the upcoming series finale, we are going to lose one of our much loved characters for good.

Show creator Shonda Rhimes has revealed that the loss of this fan favourite will be ‘painful’ for the cast and for viewers and told Hollywood Reporter that while she couldn’t confirm the character’s identity, she could say it was a ‘hard’ storyline to write and for the actors to perform.
