Last night saw the very welcome return of DCS Mike Walker, DCI Roisin Conner and DS David Satchell in Lynda La Plante’s Trial & Retribution.

The first part of the new series opened with upper class no-good Sebastian Cole being taken by ambulance to hospital due to a heart condition, however, the ambulance was run off the road by drug barons, killing one of the paramedics and seriously injuring the other.

Don’t Call Me Stupid takes two celebrities with very different interests and quizzes them in a unique head to head battle.

Once the celebrities have been introduced to each other its then down to each of them to learn as much about the others passion or hobby as they possibly can.

Bert Large (Ian McNeice) could be the man to put Portwenn on the culinary map. In a life changing decision he abandons his plumbing business to open his own restaurant.

But as with Bert’s previous enterprises, the new business venture is fraught with problems.

The opening of Large’s restaurant is far from a success, when Dr Martin Ellingham, who has a phobia about blood, finds a spot of blood on his plate. To the embarrassment of Louisa (Caroline Catz), Martin complains to Bert in front of the other customers, threatening a visit from Environmental Health unless he can clean up his act. At the start of the new series Rebus is facing difficult times having been sent to Police Training College as a result of his behaviour.

Ken Stott explains: “He is isolated on all sides in this episode and he tests people’s patience to the limit. It’s rather interesting how his relationship with Siobhan goes onto a knife edge but that the bond they share is much greater at the end of the day.”

And Ken is proud of what they achieve in Resurrection Men, the first episode in the series.

“It’s a departure from formulaic principles. We do try to steer away from the ordinary on Rebus because much of television does comply with these principles.” Read more & comment »
