Jonathan Creek 4

There are some programmes that feel like they just fit in the Bank Holiday schedules. Mystery drama Jonathan Creek is definitely one of those programmes due to its light nature and intriguing plots. This one-off special is also a sort of set-up for a brand new series of three episodes coming next year. It introduces us to a new-look Jonathan Creek who has grown-up, albeit only slightly, and is no longer living in that windmill. However we have to wait quite a while for Jonathan to actually appear on screen as we are first presented with the episode’s central mystery.

Panto!: John Bishop’s one-off comedy drama may be cheesy but it does provide a little bit of cheeky Christmas fun

PANTO_06

If there’s one festive experience that unites us all then it’s the very British tradition of going to the pantomime something most of us did at least once during our youth. I personally remember trips to the Crewe Lyceum and the Wolverhampton Grand and seeing such stars as John Inman, June ‘Dot Cotton’ Brown, Allo Allo’s Gordon Kaye and err.. Linda Lusardi. Another person who has a very personal experience of pantomime is John Bishop who back in 2007 appeared in a production of Dick Whittington at the Salford Lowry in 2007 while he was still a jobbing DJ in Liverpool. Bishop has taken these experiences and turned them into a 90 minute comedy drama imaginatively titled Panto! in which he stars and has also co-written the script alongside Gimme Gimme Gimme scribe Jonathan Harvey.

It’s the first night of pantomime ‘Dick Whittington’ at the Grand Theatre Lancaster. Lewis Loud (John Bishop), Morecambe FM’s cheeky DJ, is preparing for his stage debut as Jack the Lad. During rehearsals, romance has blossomed between him and Dick Whittington, namely token celebrity Tamsin (Sheridan Smith), better known to her fans as ‘Mad Mindy The Axe Murderer’ from the nation’s favourite soap… Read more & comment »

Mr Stink review: Hugh Bonneville, Johnny Vegas & Sheridan Smith shine in this hilarious adaptation of David Walliams’

mr stink

When I was younger the BBC always used to air an adaptation of popular children’s tale in the run-up to Christmas these included the great Chronicles of Narnia series as well as Five Children and It and The Magician’s House. As the BBC’s children’s output has evolved this tradition has died out however with tonight’s adaptation of David Walliams’ Mr Stink it feels like it may just have returned. While watching this warm, funny and traditional tale I was put in mind of the programmes of my youth and wondered why this one-off special couldn’t have been extended into a two or three part series.

Mrs Biggs: Ronnie Biggs tells his side of the story, but says Charmian is still the love of his life!

Whilst the nation is gripped to the current ITV drama, Mrs Biggs, which tells the story of the long-suffering wife of Great Train robber, Ronnie Biggs, not many of us feel much sympathy towards her husband.

Ronnie and Charmian Biggs married when Charmian was only 17, and pregnant. Before meeting Biggs she had lead a respectable crime-less life, living with her strict parents. After meeting Ron, she ended up in with a criminal record and lost the respect, and all contact with her parents after she ran away to marry him.

The pair then led a relatively simple life together, having two young boys, and were generally happy, until Ronnie got involved in the Great Train Robbery and ended up being sent to prison for 30 years.
