Fans of Coronation Street will know that in last night’s visit to Weatherfield, for a moment or two, it looked like Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati) might be going to make it as her doctors reported positive signs of improvement as they lifted the sedation that had kept her in a coma…

However, meanwhile, we saw evil Karl Munro (John Michie) trying to seem like a concerned friend as he quizzed Marcus Dent (Charlie Condou) about how Sunita was doing. And on hearing that she could well be about to come round, Karl panicked.

We then saw that he went to the hospital and slipped into Sunita’s room, and sadly for her, the last thing she saw on this mortal coil was him menacingly standing over her, telling her that everything that’s happened is all her fault… Read more & comment »

Fans of Coronation Street will of course know that in last night’s hour-long episode, we saw Sunita’s doctor telling her estranged husband Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) that he should prepare himself “for the worst” and added that he should probably bring his and Sunita’s children in to see their mother…

And as has been reported recently, in this week’s episodes, we’re to see a joyous Dev telling his friend and neighbours that medics come to believe that they were wrong as Sunita shows signs of emerging from her coma.

So the big question is, will Sunita live or die?

Sunita was overcome by smoke and trapped by the blaze after she caught Karl Munro (John Michie) deliberately setting the fire. He then pushed her down the cellar steps – where she fell unconscious – before making good his own escape from the burning pub.

As more details about the upcoming Rovers Return arson storyline emerge, it has now been revealed that Tony Hirst, who plays fireman Paul Kershaw in the hit ITV soap, has been axed from the show.

Paul first came onto our Coronation Street screens back in 2010 as the married fireman that Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) began a controversial affair with behind the back of his dementia suffering wife, Lesley, after he rescued her from having her head stuck in railings on top of Underworld factory on her 50th birthday.

There’s shocking news for fans of Corrie today as it’s been revealed that in a dramatic new storyline, the iconic pub The Rovers Return will be burned to the ground in a fire which is set to kill Sunita Alahan!

And given that Sunita (Shobna Gulati) has had a long running feud with landlady Stella Price (Michelle Collins) – which began when Sunita had an affair with Stella’s bloke Karl Munro (John Michie) – after her death, Sunita will be accused of arson and therefore deliberately setting the pub on fire.

Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati has announced that she’s leaving the show next year and her role as mum of two, Sunita Alahan.

Shobna first joined the show eight years ago, and has been at the centre of a number of high profile storylines including being trapped in the rubble of the tram crash, being stalked and nearly killed by her husband Dev’s (Jimmi Harkishin) mistress Mad Maya, who was played by Sasha Behar, and more recently, having an affair with Karl Munro (John Michie).

As to how she’ll exit the show, that is currently being decided by the show’s producer and the writing team, but according to The Sun, her departure will be “explosive” which in soap-speak usually means the character is leaving in a coffin.

Of leaving, Shobna told the paper, “I have loved playing Sunita but, having played the role originally from 2001 to 2005 and then returning to Corrie four years ago, I really feel the time has come for me to focus on other aspects of my career… Read more & comment »
