Sky 1 orders second series of Ruth Jones’ Stella!

Stella, the brainchild of Ruth Jones, has won over a loyal audience on Sky 1 HD. The first series’ debut was the second biggest UK comedy launch in multichannel history and the show continues to go from strength to strength as part of Sky 1’s Comedy Fridays.

A charming slice of the working-class Welsh Valleys, the show is a comedy drama that centres around the world of Stella (Ruth Jones), a 40-something mum juggling the ups and downs of family life, amid the chaos of her eccentric friends, relatives and children’s fathers.

Ruth Jones’ comedy Stella gets a second series, as does The Café

Fans of Ruth Jones’ new Sky1 comedy Stella will doubtless be pleased to hear that the show will be back next year with a second series.

Ruth of course stars in the show as a struggling single mum, and the project has been her first major new TV series since Gavin and Stacey.

Speaking to the Sun about the second series of Stella – which will be comprised of ten episodes – Ruth said, “I’m over the moon that Sky want more Stella.

Ruth Jones was happy to write ‘Stella’ without James Corden

Ruth Jones, who wrote and stars in new Sky sitcom, Stella, has revealed that she didn’t miss James Corden’s input when she was writing the show.

Ruth – who, as you can see in the picture on the left has lost around five stones in weight – and James of course co-wrote hit sitcom Gavin and Stacey, however, since then, both have embarked on new projects, one of which for Ruth has been Stella.

Speaking to What’s On TV about Stella, Ruth made the revelation when asked if she’d missed having James write with her.

She said, “If it was Gavin And Stacey, I would, but he’s not part of the Stella world.

“It’s the same for him, as he writes with Mathew Baynton (Gavin and Stacey character Deano). He’s doing a new series and I wouldn’t be part of that.”

However, though she wrote Stella alone, Ruth “developed the concept” for the show with her husband David, with whom she runs production company, Tidy. Read more & comment »

Ruth Jones talks about her new Sky 1 comedy, Stella

Ruth Jones, who of course co-wrote the iconic sitcom Gavin and Stacey, has been talking to TV&Satellite Week magazine about her forthcoming new comedy for Sky 1 which is entitled, Stella.

Ruth, who plays the title role of Stella herself, first explained that the new show – which premieres on Friday, January 6th on Sky 1 HD – focuses on the life of a middle aged mum who’s forced to take in other people’s ironing to make ends meet.

And on top of her financial woes, Stella has to deal with a son who’s in prison and a teenaged daughter who’s determined to be a rebellious as possible. There’s also her “sex mad” sister-in-law Paula (Elizabeth Berrington) to deal with. Read more & comment »

Stars line up to play roles in Ruth Jones’s new show, Stella

Ruth Jones is of course arguably best known for her role as Nessa in Gavin and Stacey – which she of course co-wrote with James Corden – but in the New Year, we’re going to see her starring in Stella on Sky1.

Ruth, who plays the title role of Stella, describes the new series as, “an authentic slice of the working-class Welsh valleys”.

Based around the trials and tribulations of a 40 year old working mum, the show is to feature a stellar line up of actors, including James Corden, but will also star Welsh rugby ace Shane Williams and coach Warren Gatland, as well as boxer Joe Calzaghe in his first major acting role.

Speaking on Xfm recently, Ruth said, “I won’t tell you what Joe does exactly, I’m keeping it a surprise. But it does involve a punch.
