Michel Hazanavicius’ almost completely silent film The Artist won Best Picture as well as Jean Dujardin winning Best Actor for his role as early movie star George Valentin and Hazanavicius himself won Best Director. In addition the film won Oscars for its Original Score and Costume Design. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo set in a Parisian train station also took home five awards for Cinematography, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.
Paddy Power have today installed Jean Dujardin as the new 8/11 favourite for the ‘Best Actor’ Oscar after ‘The Artist’ star last night pipped George Clooney and Gary Oldman to the BAFTA equivalent. Clooney, who was at one stage as short as 1/3 for the gong, is now 11/10 for his role in ‘The Descendants’.
The odds would suggest that Oscar night will be a glory filled evening for ‘The Artist’ as the French romantic drama is as short as 1/10 for ‘Best Picture’ while director Michael Hazanavicius is 1/6 for ‘Best Director’.
Paddy Power have today shortened the odds on Michel Hazanavicius’ ‘The Artist’ claiming this years Oscar for Best Picture to 4/11 following last nights Golden Globe Awards. The silent French romance film is now the firm favourite for the gong with comedy-drama ‘The Descendants’ and Steven Spielberg’s ‘War Horse’ its closest rivals at 4/1 and 9/1 respectively.
‘The Artist’ is also favoured to come out on top in the Best Director category with Michael Hazanavicius available at 8/11. Martin Scorsese (Hugo) leads the chasing pack at 5/2 with Alexander Payne (The Descendants) and Steven Spielberg (War Horse) available at 11/2 and 7/1.
This year’s Golden Globe nominations threw up no surprises as nominations were handed out to The Artist, The Help and The Descendants.
Bookies Paddy Power wasted no time in pin pointing their favourites, making The Descendants, starring George Clooney, their 10/11 favourite to pick up the Golden Globe for Best Picture Drama with silent movie The Artist the 8/13 odds-on favourite to pick up the Globe for Best Picture Musical/Comedy.
