Dispatches: The Truth About Your Food

Dispatches: The Truth About Your Food

Britain is the most obese nation in Europe, and we’re continuing to pile on the pounds. Many of us believe it’s not our fault, choosing to blame our genes, age or metabolism. Others find their weight gain a complete mystery. This investigation examines the excuses we make for our increased girth and debunks the myths that mask our calorie consumption. Journalist Jane Moore examines how much food we’re really eating and puts the spotlight on the food industry to reveal what effect our increased dining-out habit is having on our health.

She takes a group of children undercover to find out just how much fat is on the menu for kids in Britain’s favourite family restaurants. Moore meets a family who insist that despite eating healthily and exercising they seem unable to shift their excess weight. With the help of a fridge-cam and a little secret surveillance, Dispatches attempts to unearth the root cause of their problem. Read more & comment »

JAMIE OLIVER: EAT TO SAVE YOUR LIFE

As millions of Britons recover from their Christmas excess and make resolutions to eat more healthily, Jamie Oliver reveals what is really in the Great British diet, and how it could be killing us. Using a series of dramatic demonstrations - including the autopsy of a 25-stone man who literally ate himself to death - Jamie, fitness expert Dr Catherine Spencer-Smith and anatomist Dr Gunther von Hagens show 18 volunteers exactly what harm their terrible diets are doing to them and, most importantly, what they can do to change their ways and get healthy.

The programme is part of Channel 4’s The Big Food Fight , a season of programming which aims to raise awareness and encourage debate about food production, animal welfare and healthy eating. With the worst diet in Europe, two thirds of Britons are overweight, and treating obesity-related diseases costs the NHS more than £3 billion a year. Experts fear that today’s children could be the first generation to die younger than their parents if nothing is done. Read more & comment »

For the Shimshal people food is seasonal, fresh and at the heart of family life. The four junk food lovers spend a month in this remote corner of Northern Pakistan living with Shimshal villagers to gain a new perspective on their own diets, and the approach to food that the West has, where meals are frequently full of saturated fats and artificial additives.
