Following recent reports that anti-depressants are no better than a placebo in treating the majority of depressed patients, THIS MORNING explores the topic to depression on tomorrow’s show.
Dr Chris Steele will speak for the first time about the three bouts of severe depression he suffered between 1981-1991. He recalls chairing a depression phone-in on the programme whilst in the grips of a bad bout of the illness. Unable to cope with the item, he locked himself in the studio toilets and broke down. “I was crying and shaking and suffering from anxiety.”
Unable to imaging presenting the phone-in he called his wife Monica who said, “The item is just going to be 10 minutes long. All you have to do is get through the next 10 minutes.” Dr Chris describes those 10 minutes as ‘hell’ but his wife’s words helped him through and at the time, no-one was any the wiser to the crippling depression he was suffering. Fans of ITV1’s award winning daytime show, This Morning have accused temporary hosts, Eamonn Holmes And Ruth Langsford of ruining the show.
The pair are in charge while regular hosts, Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton enjoy a well deserved holiday.
However one viewer left a scathing message on a fan website saying: “Are they trying to kill This Morning off?”
Time Lady added: “Mr and Mrs Phoney for a whole week! That’s it, I’m switching off.”
I have never been a big Holmes fan and I think his wife, a nice lady though she may be, is wooden and stilted and not much of a presenter.
ITV may be in luck though. I’ve heard Richard and Judy are on the market for a new show again…..

Phil and Fern have never been known for their composure, but they surpassed their normal wacky behaviour when they collapsed into a giggle fit lasting six minutes today.
It all started badly when Fern apologised for her slight lisp due to having a tooth removed. Philip began to mock her whistles and the laughing started there. Then the pair moved on to discuss Jeremy Paxman’s pants and his recent complaint to M&S bosses about their lack of support. In between sniggering the pairs conversation went:
Fern: “Do you feel like a pant rant? Because we might do pants tomorrow.”
Phillip: “I think we should do a test of all sorts of different pants. Like that (jumps up and down, lunges).”
Fern: “Oh I like that.”
Phillip: “Currently I’m very happy with my pants.”
Fern: “Are you comfy with your pants?”
Phillip: “Yes, I’m happy with my pants.”
Fern: “Because what makes a good pant? You want to feel the undercarriage is secure and snug. You don’t want them wobbling around.”
Phillip: “Yes, yes, undercarriage stowed.”
Fern: “Flaps up!”
(Both collapse in hysterics)
Phillip: “Not down”
Fern: “No.”
Phillip: “Cos the last thing you want is your undercarriage ripped off.”
Fern: “At speed.”

Sharon Marshall enjoyed a good, old fashioned flirt with ‘Torchwood’ star John Barrowman who pinched her bum during her interview with him at the TV Quick Awards.
John Barrowman: “She’s got a great bottom in that dress I can tell you.”
He went on to say that he would snog Sharon if he won the award for ‘Best New Drama’ and after doing so duly kept his promise, planting a smacker on her lips at the aftershow celebrations. Looks like our favourite TV expert turned the head of the gay icon - for a night at least!
