The one thing I’m not a fan of in terms of Waterloo Road is that some storylines are instantly forgotten about once they’ve happened. For example last week’s plot involving Fergal and his mother Theresa wasn’t even mentioned in this instalment while Maggie didn’t seem to miss her new kitchen assistant. That may be because Maggie has other things on her mind what with Grantly’s kidney failure and the fact that she now has to prepare a pitch to Lorraine in order to keep her catering tender at the school.

It does seem like quite a while ago since Waterloo Road moved from Rochdale to Greenock in Scotland. But in fact we’ve only had two terms in the new school and it already seems like a lot has changed. Plenty of staff members and students have arrived and departed while plenty of relationships have developed and cooled off. But some things never change, and this opening episode of the summer term run is no exception as it centres around a new bad boy pupil with a shady past.

On the day of the inter-school football final, Michael bans Tom from playing Kacey after it is discovered that it is against the rules to have a girl on the team. The snub forces Kacey to face up to her identity issues. Tom goes against Michael’s demands and tell Kacey that if she pretends to be a boy, she can play. Kacey wins the match nearly single-handedly, but when friend Zoe plants a victory kiss on her, disgusted Barry becomes outraged, revealing that Kacey is a girl and jeopardising the team’s win.

Actress Zoe Lucker has of course appeared in a number of TV shows, including EastEnders, Footballers’ Wives and Waterloo Road, and almost invariably, she plays the role of a gutsy, feisty woman…
However, in an interview with the Mirror, Zoe has revealed that in real life, she’s a far cry from the bold characters she portrays, and is in fact often crippled by anxiety.
She said, “I get nervous and panicky about absolutely everything. Generally I am a nervous wreck.
“I hate things like busy shopping centres and I love a country pub during the day but the thought of going into a crowded bar fills me with dread.”
Zoe added, “One of the bravest things I ever did was take part in Strictly Come Dancing and I stayed in it for eight weeks… Read more & comment »

In my review of the last episode of Waterloo Road I hoped that tonight’s final part of the run would concentrate more on Christine’s alcoholism than it did on Michael’s agreement to help his father to die. Thankfully my wishes were fulfilled as this end of term episode focused on Connor’s attempts to leave his mother behind and further his relationship with Imogen however as we see Christine isn’t easily fooled.

I can’t believe that the first term at the brand new Waterloo Road school is almost at an end and it’s fair to say that the reception to the new surroundings has been fairly mixed.
Though we’ve seen episodes focusing on a lot of the new pupils, someone who hasn’t been given that much time to develop is Rhiannon, a character who has mainly existed to cause trouble for Scout.

Over the last two weeks we’ve seen some fairly big names leave Waterloo Road and tonight another character leaves the school for good.
To counteract this departure, two new characters are introduced tonight to make up the numbers and hopefully stick around for a while before they inexplicably leave midway through term. We are led to believe that our first new character, Morag Murray, has been at the school since the beginning of the term although we are only meeting properly for the first time in this episode. We see that she lives in a shack in the middle of nowhere along with her brother and father the latter of whom is a freegan meaning that he is opposed to society controlled by consumerism.

If there’s one thing you can’t accuse Waterloo Road it’s moving at a slow pace as with at least half a dozen stories covered in each episode I feel it’s fairly hard to be bored while watching it. Last week’s episode was built around the much publicised exit of Chelsee Healey’s Janeece so I thought this instalment would at least pass by without any major events but how wrong I was. Tonight we finally saw Madi’s story explained in more detail while we also had a wedding and the somewhat shocking exit of another established character.
