Tenement

A decrepid tenement in the east end of Glasgow sets the scene for a horrific strangling. Resident Agnes Welsh, a prolific ‘community crusader’, is identified as the sorry victim.

Her protests and campaigns have annoyed a number of people and DCI Burke and his team face a long list of suspects, all of whom would find life a great deal easier without Agnes around.

After discovering the body, Mhari McCann, the victim’s friend and neighbour, points the team in the direction of local business woman and property developer Charlie McEwan. McEwan’s plans for redevelopment include demolishing the tenement – only Agnes stood in her way…

It’s not long before Ross and Reid’s enquiries lead them to the local community centre where they find Graham Martin and his daughter Alice, along with the distressed groundsman, Park Ronnie.

Martin doesn’t seem bothered by Agnes’s death but has an alibi – he was visiting his son Brian in hospital. Brian was knocked down by a car and left for dead three weeks ago. Could the murder and the accident be linked? Ross decides to take a closer look at the hit-and-run.

Fraser’s investigations put McCann in the frame when he realises she waited an hour to call the police after discovering Agnes’s body. When she is caught trying to flee the country with wads of cash, the team’s suspicions grow but only days later she suffers the same fate as her friend.

Throttled with the same 2mm wire rope, McCann’s murder confirms Burke and the team are on the hunt for a serial killer…

Meanwhile, Ross’s commitment to finding the hit-and-run driver pays off as he finds a tape that the traffic squad hadn’t bothered to view…

Suddenly, things start falling into place, but that doesn’t mean the murderer can’t find the time to squeeze in another strangling, can Ross reach the victim in time…?
