The Graham Norton Show: Barbara Windsor Talks About Nudity

This week, Graham Norton talks nudity with EastEnders star and Carry On veteran, actress Barbara Windsor.

Appearing on on BBC Two’s The Graham Norton Show, Barbara, whose only nude scene became an iconic film moment, reveals that she’s always regretted turning down a repeat performance in real life:

“I was offered the very first edition of Penthouse, but I said no. I regret it because any pictures of me are silly sexy, I’m always a joke. The thing is, they offered me Penthouse but my husband at the time said I couldn’t do it. It would have been nice to have had a really good, sexy picture of me.

“The only nude scene I ever did on film was an accident. You weren’t allowed to show anything in those days.”

The Albert Square matriarch also reveals that she’s sharing her space with unwanted visitors both on and off-screen. The Queen Vic becomes infested in a storyline inspired by reality:

“Someone got nits in real life… it was Mo … and we thought we’d use it as a storyline, it [the Queen Vic] needs redecorating … and at home … I had the mouse man at home. Scott was terrified … a mouse was in the bedroom … we couldn’t sleep there, we had to sleep in the spare room with all the lights on!”

She also gives her views on royalty and the recent suggestion that class distinctions rocked Wills’ and Kate’s royal romance:

“I’m very patriotic, I know the Queen. I met her at the Royal Variety Performance a couple of years ago, then when she visited EastEnders she said ‘you’ve got more clothes on today’. She came behind the bar at the Vic and I was scared because it was a bit dirty, but she made it very easy for me … I don’t understand about Miss Middleton, she sounds lovely and normal.”

And she’s looking forward to new Mitchell women arriving in Albert Square: “I’m really pleased because the family’s a bit depleted, it’ll be nice to have two feisty ladies.”

The Graham Norton Show, 10.00pm, Thursday 12 April BBC Two
