The Supersizers Eat … Medieval

Giles Coren and Sue Perkins continue their culinary history tour by lording it up in the Middle Ages, living the life of aristocrats in their medieval manor.

Sue takes on the role of damsel in distress as her home and land is commandeered by Norman conqueror Giles, armed with a broadsword and his own unique brand of charm as he attempts to woo her.

A dead ringer for King Harold, Michelin-starred chef Martin Blunos spends the week conjuring up some extraordinary creations, including a sumptuous Cockentrice – made from the forepart of a chicken sewn to the rear of a piglet. But before they can sample such delights they must take advice from the doctor on balancing their four humours. Viewers discover whether the intrepid duo are: phlegmatic (sluggish and dull); melancholic (sad); choleric (bad-tempered); or sanguine (sexy and laid-back).

In an action-packed week that covers almost 400 years of history, Giles becomes a gallant knight and samples the fare of a crusader, while Sue takes lessons in playing the harp and tries a selection of medieval dating food. The week also sees the pair try falconry, go on a Chaucerian pilgrimage and share a meal with historian Colin Spencer and broadcaster Michael Portillo, in which they discover the impact of the Magna Carta on the English diet.

The week culminates with a fanfare, as trumpets herald the sensational banquet Martin has prepared for more than 20 guests. The feast of boar’s head, suckling pig, Coqz Heaumez (helmeted cock), peacock, and hippocras is accompanied by period entertainment from a contortionist, fire-breather and musicians.
