The Supersizers Eat … The Fifties

Giles Coren and Sue Perkins continue their culinary history tour and travel back to the Fifties, a decade that began with rationing and ended with Harold Macmillan exclaiming that Brits “have never had it so good”.

With rationing continuing until the mid-Fifties, the Supersizers begin their foodie trip with a meal of horse meat and canned salmon. As the queen of homespun goodness, Mary Berry, whips up a series of culinary creations in the kitchen, Sue spends a stressful week as a housewife, while Giles manages a car showroom. Aided by Elizabeth David’s cookery books, Sue cooks up a storm for Tony Turnbull, Giles’s boss at The Times, complete with a bottle of Babycham.

Giles and Sue celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953, with a sumptuous buffet of Coronation chicken, potato salad and cheese soufflé and mark the occasion with a cake competition – which sees Sue up against stiff competition from Anthea Turner, Marguerite Patten and Mary Berry.

As aspects of American youth culture begin to seep into British society, the Supersizers take a trip to the movies and go bowling before sharing a knickerbocker glory, banana split and Coca-Cola with Bruce Welch of The Shadows.

The week ends on a high with a roadside picnic – to mark the opening of the first motorways – en route to the Hayling Island holiday camp. Then it’s back to the present day where a visit to the doctors awaits Giles and Sue.
