The Tudors Coming To BBC

BBC Two have acquired the exclusive rights from Sony Pictures Television International to broadcast The Tudors, a lavish ten-part drama featuring the early life of Henry VIII and his close coterie of advisors, minions and lovers.

Written by Michael Hirst (Elizabeth), The Tudors was shot on location in Ireland with a largely British cast including Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Mission Impossible 3) as Henry VIII and Jeremy Northam (Gosford Park) as Sir Thomas More.

The Tudors focuses on Henry’s rampant life during his late twenties/early thirties whilst he was still married to his first queen Katherine of Aragon (Maria Doyle Kennedy) whilst pursuing Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer, Casanova) and every other pretty face that caught his wandering eye.

The stellar cast also includes Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) as Cardinal Wolesey, Gabrielle Anwar (Scent Of A Woman) as Princess Margaret, Henry Czerny (The Pink Panther) and Peter O’Toole’s daughter Kate O’Toole as Lady Salisbury.

The Tudors successfully premiered on US premium pay network Showtime in early April, where it delivered the network’s best series debut in three years.

Sue Deeks, Head of Series, BBC Programme Acquisition, said: The Tudors is a lavish, highly entertaining and addictive historical drama which takes a fresh look at Henry VIII.

“Jonathan Rhys Meyers sexy and vital monarch completely dispels the image of the older, overweight and infirm ruler – I know that BBC viewers will really enjoy this contemporary take on the Tudor dynasty.

The Tudors will transmit this Autumn on BBC Two.
