Yesterday saw the first day of shooting for the forthcoming fifth season of The Vampire Diaries – and boy are we excited!

However, Zap2It has the scoop on some brand new recurring characters that will be joining the cast this fall when the show returns to The CW.

The first new character – who discussed a few days back – is a guy called Jesse who will become Caroline’s new boy toy when she goes to college.

According to TV Line: “He’s sweet, he’s charming, he’s confident… oh, and he’s a human who has understandable reasons for disliking members of the undead. So that could cause some problems down the line”.

There’s going to be more drama when Caroline and Elena find out that college isn’t going to be the easy ride that they initially thought. Apparently, there’s a new professor on the block and he’s said to be hot, but mean and he knows more about Mystic Falls than he is letting on. Could there be trouble brewing and what could his presence mean for some of the characters? His true passion according to TV Guide is research that he believes will help humanity – he sounds like a creep!

And finally, there’s some not so good news for Damon as the show has cast a new male doctor who knows all of Damon’s secrets. We can’t wait for the explosive scenes between Damon and the new doctor as let’s face it, if he knows things about Damon… there’s definitely going to be some sort of showdown.

Other newbies who have previously been reported include Megan, who attends Mystic Falls High’s 1950s dance and tries to get it on with Jeremy. There’s also Eastern European beauty Nadia who comes into contact with Matt and Rebekah at a Prague bar.

The Vampire Diaries kicks off on Thursday, 10 October at 8/7c on The CW!
