The verdict on Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show

Last week, Lisa wrote about Katy Brand’s new series of her Big Ass Show on ITV2. This week, I got a chance to watch an episode.

Having seen a few episodes of her first series, I was surprised to see she’s still running with the unfunny sketches featuring ‘Normal’ Kate Winslet and that thick Army woman.

The digs against Kate Winslet are hard to understand, for a couple of reasons:

  1. It was funny for about one show, then got boring really quickly, and
  2. Kate Winslet hasn’t exactly been bothering the film world recently, so why pick on her?

I’m sad to report that there are few laugh out loud moments during your typical Katy Brand episode. You’d think that moving into her second series, Brand’s delivery would be a bit more slick and incisive. It’s not. It’s about as subtle as a punch in the face, and half as funny.

The introduction of the Lily ‘I’ll try anything’ Allen character is as bad as her dogging of Winslet.

Although the slutty Welsh nun sketches were worthy of a grin, especially that ‘sexy bitch‘ wimple and the confiscated sex toy she reclaims from the Mother Superior. Following on that theme, her Dickensian take on Secret Diary of a Call Girl was a moderately funny moment.

Unless she comes up with some variety to her characters and sketches, you can save yourself some time by watching one episode instead of the entire series. For the moment, Katy Brand is trailing seriously behind other comediennes like Catherine Tate and (god forbid) Karen Taylor.
