The Walking Dead spoiler: First look at David Morrisey as the Governor, and Glen Mazzara says it has been scary taking over from fired series creator Frank Darabont!

In the build up to the much-anticipated third series of the popular zombie series, The Walking Dead, the network giants behind the hit show, AMC, have released pictures of the David Morrisey as he takes his role as The Governor.

The Governor is described as one of the most formidable baddies from the series, taken from the character in Robert Kirkman’s graphic novels.  The Governor is the brutal and vicious leader of Woodbury, a small settlement of survivors, and who became one of Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) greatest enemies in the comic book series.

Speaking to TVGuide.com, Kirkman said “Seeing The Walking Dead come to life on AMC has been a real thrill for me, obviously, and moving into Season 3 I’m even more excited than ever because now I feel like we’re really getting to ‘the good stuff.  Having The Governor in the mix is going to fundamentally change the show in all kinds of awesome and exiting ways. And David Morrissey totally rocks!”

He then went on to reassure fans that the version of the character was not going to be diluted for television, commenting: The Governor in the show is definitely going to be The Governor in the comic.  I think that he’s definitely going to be a character that people love to hate and are absolutely entertained by, but also somewhat terrified of. He’s definitely going to be a very important character and a very nuanced character. We are not going to be watering him down.”

Meanwhile, Glen Mazzara, who replaced fired first series creator Frank Darabont in season 2, has admitted that his new role as showrunner has been scary, and not just on-screen.

Speaking to The Hollywood reporter, Mazzara opened up about the drama that was taking place offscreen, which, at times, mirrored the onscreen terror being played out.

Mazzara explained:  “It was scary. I went to the show to work with Frank, and I know what it’s like to lose a show that you’ve created.  I knew it was a painful situation for him, the cast and the crew.  I know what it’s like when all of a sudden the creator’s not there.”
