Popular ITV chat show, This Morning, has “unreservedly” apologised to the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge after accidentally showing pictures of her baby bump in a bikini.
The incident happened when the show’s hosts, Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford were discussing the Italian magazine that took, and published the pictures of Kate Middleton sunbathing during a private holiday with Prince William on the island of Mustique, condemning their actions.
A picture of the magazine was shown on screen, with the very pictures they were discussing shown clearly on the front page, ironically making the situation a million times worse than it already was as it allowed an extra couple of million people, who did not subscribe to the Italian trashy rag, to view the images that have spurred a national outcry over the lack of respect and privacy shown towards our future Queen.
After the show was broadcast the Mirror newspaper contacted ITV to point out the mistake, which prompted them to get Eamonn to read out the following apology, live on air:
“Earlier during today’s news review we were discussing photographs of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on a beach in Mustique published in an Italian magazine.
“Unfortunately we accidentally showed an unblurred image of the magazine cover, which briefly showed the photographs.
“This was a deeply regrettable error and we are very sorry.
“We apologise unreservedly to the Duke and the Duchess.”
This is not the only blunder of its kind that This Morning has made. Last year main host Philip Schofield accidentally showed a list of alleged paedophiles in connection with the Jimmy Savile scandal whilst confronting the Prime Minister David Cameron with it live on air, a mistake described as “misguided” by ITV’s Director of Television Peter Fincham at the time, adding that he was “confident this sort of thing won’t happen again”.
Meanwhile the Italian gossip magazine behind the pictures, Chi – which is owned by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi was caught in a torrent of criticism after being the first magazine to print Kate and Wills’ holiday pictures yesterday.
On Chi’s website, Kate is pictured on the magazine’s front cover wearing a blue bikini, slightly displaying a baby bump, relaxing in the sea along with the headline “the belly grows”.
A second image shows William with his arm around Kate as they walk along a beach, along with the headline “Kate and William honeymoon in three”.
If that wasn’t intrusive enough the magazine then went on to list details of the villa that the couple are staying on whilst on holiday, thought to cost £19,000 a week to rent.
It is not known at this stage whether the couple have been informed about the pictures, or if they are considering any legal action against the magazine.
However a spokesman for the royal couple condemned the magazine for breaching their privacy, saying:
“We are disappointed that photographs of the Duke and Duchess on a private holiday look likely to be published overseas.
“This is a clear breach of the couple’s right to privacy.”
