TIME magazine names Mariah Carey the “ultimate pop star”! See who else made the list!

by Emily H

It’s official, Mariah Carey has the biggest ‘ultimate pop stardom’ ranking according to TIME magazine.

The publication took a big look back at every song that’s made it into the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 since 1960, and then ranked which artists had the most hits on the chart. The artists’ career span then helped to determine which artists were the most successful pop stars of all time, and, of course, Mariah Carey came out on top.

According the very scientific study, Carey’s most successful year in music to date was back in 2005, when she appeared on the chart numerous times with the singles ‘We Belong Together’, ‘Don’t Forget About Us’ and ‘Shake It Off’.

However, almost 10 years later, the star unfortunately hasn’t had quite the same luck. Carey’s most recent album, her 14th studio release, ‘Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse’, opened at #3 on the Billboard Top 200, selling just 58,000 copies in its first week. To date, it has sold little more than 103,000 copies.

The album’s singles ‘#Beautiful’ and ‘You’re Mine (Eternal) have also failed to crack the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

However, TIME’s prestigious honour is sure to give the superstar something to smile about.

Carey’s husband, ‘America’s Got Talent’ host Nick Cannon, recently revealed that the two have been “living apart for months”, and the couple, who have been married for six years and two children together, have been spotted out by the paparazzi without their respective wedding rings.

Other notable pop superstars appearing on TIME’s big list (which you can take a look at in its entirety here) includes; Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Katy Perry and Usher.

Yeah, perhaps Time should have consulted Billboard on this. Time claims they used Billboard Hot 100 chart histories to compile this list, yet the publication that owns and publishes the chart completely begs to differ about their rankings. Billboard already has an official list ranking the most successful artists ever on their Hot 100 singles chart, and Mariah isn’t #1. Methinks Mariah and her PR team slipped some money Time’s way.
