Tonight’s episode is a bit of a blur. Owen Harper is - to his misfortune - dead. Jack, in a complete reversal of policy from series one, hollers that they shouldn’t perform the autopsy just yet, then rushes out to retrieve the resurrection glove from amongst the freaky weevil people.
After an anticlimactic rescue of the glove, Jack returns to Torchwood and reanimates Owen. Awww. Except his primary reason is to find out the code for the alien morgue. No-one likes getting a call from work after hours, but raising you from the dead to find out a code? You’re taking the piss Jack, aren’t you?
Normally the resurrection glove gives you a couple of minutes to interrogate the stiff and say your goodbyes. But this time, Owen fails to die for good. The situation doesn’t improve for Owen though - he’s technically dead, so he can’t eat, drink and with no blood flowing through his body, he can’t even get a boner! Personally, I don’t think he gave too much thought to viagra…
Things go from bad to worse for Owen when he decides to go out for a piss up. Yeah, you can’t drink mate, your digestive system is screwed! Jack catches up with Owen in a bar and they fight - Owen’s still smarting from being called into work from the afterlife.
Jack and Owen then end up in a cell together - because Cardiff’s police are stupid enough to put two people who’ve been brawling in a bar in the same cell. Let’s ‘overlook’ that minor point for a moment, because we do get to see Owen spectacularly vomit his beer out via a handstand. Oh yeah, and a conversation about the nature of immortality.
Anyway, that bloody army of weevils won’t go away. They seem to be attracted to Owen, or at least the creepy black-eyed version that’s taking him over. It looks like some entity is taking over Owen’s body. And from what we understand, this entity is taking another chance to claim the Earth.
Martha, who’s been pretty quiet until this point gets attacked by the glove, which drains the life force from her, and she ends up looking like…Martha in a bad latex mask. I think the effect is supposed to be an old lady.
So the Torchwood gang take Miss Jones to the hospital (why? they were going to autopsy Owen by themselves…). But the death-type thing gets loose in the hospital and goes on a killing spree. It’s about to chase the significant 13th victim when Owen saves the lil’ guy and then decides to get dirty and wrestle the bony spectre. For a short guy, he does pretty well for himself and eventually beats the wraith back to wherever it came from.
He still doesn’t have a pulse though.
The brilliant Doctor Martha manages to give him a guesstimate of how long he might ‘live’ for - somewhere between 30 minutes and 30 years. Typically bloody doctor.
Anyway, knowing that his undead state has caused other people’s deaths, Owen has an uncharacteristic attack of conscience and asks Jack to help him redress the balance. He gets a reluctant, lukewarm response.
So, this episode of Death Becomes Him carries over until next week. I’m not complaining - this is a brilliant storyline for Owen Harper, and next week’s episode looks like being even more exciting.
