Torchwood star Gareth David-Lloyd was determined his child wouldn’t be born in England
So in order to ensure he had the time to gets his wife Gemma to a hospital in Wales, he had a clause written into his Torchwood contract that enabled him to take time off from filming when Gemma went into labour.
The Sun states, “Gareth and Gemma ended up driving from Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, where he was filming for the show, to Abergavenny in Gwent just in time for baby Lily Christina to arrive in his homeland…”
Gareth, who played the role of Ianto Jones in Torchwood – and who has recorded a Torchwood audio book, The Sin Eaters, and appeared in the Torchwood audio dramas Lost Souls, Asylum, Golden Age, The Dead Line, The Lost Files and The House of the Dead – said, “The condition in the contract was that if Gemma went into labour we would have to get back to Wales because we did not want an English baby…
“I actually got a speeding ticket on the way back because I put my foot down where I shouldn’t.”
Gemma, who’s from Newport, added, “Nothing against the English but we are both very passionate about being Welsh so we wanted Lily to be Welsh.”
