As we reported yesterday, TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson was arrested this week for shoplifting at a Tesco store in Henley.
And today, he has told the Sun that he doesn’t know why he stole from the store on at least five occasions, and believes that he needs psychiatric help.
Thompson also apologised for causing embarrassment to his family and friends, and for “letting down” his fans by stealing.
He told the paper, “Hopefully I can make amends. I am so sorry for all my recent stupid and irresponsible actions.
“I am of course devastated for my family and friends, whom I’ve let down — and will seek the treatment that is clearly needed.
“I’m not the first, and I certainly won’t be the last person to do something without rhyme or reason. What went through my head, only time will tell.”
Worrall Thompson also revealed that after his arrest, while in custody at a local police station, he asked himself, “Why, why, why are you taking three onions?”
He added, “It’s all been incredibly emotional. I’ve sobbed myself to sleep — not because I’ve been feeling sorry for myself. I’d never do that.
“It’s just not knowing why I’ve done this and the feeling I’ve let people down.
“Tesco and the police have been asking me the same questions, because the amounts that I took weren’t even that big. All of it together only amounted to about £100.
“They were things like cheese, bread, onions, two packets of discounted coleslaw.
“On one occasion I paid £180 for three crates of champagne and at the same time nicked £4 of stuff. How ridiculous and how stupid.
“I’ve got to face up to it and that means seeking help — psychiatric help. I don’t feel ill — although I feel sick today — but I think these things go on inside your head.”
Of course, Antony isn’t the first celebrity to claim they are kleptomaniacs. As the Daily Star reports, the late Farrah Fawcett was arrested twice in the ‘70s for shoplifting clothes, and in 2001, actress Winona Ryder was arrested at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills after stealing $5,000 of goods.
Britney Spears was repeatedly accused of shoplifting in 2007, and in 2008 she allegedly walked out of a store with a $200 top, which she says she “forgot” to pay for.
In 2008, Peaches Geldof was accused of stealing underwear from a shop in East London and last October, she was allegedly caught on a London Boots with £70-worth of make-up in her bag. However, she has never been charged with shoplifting.
Also, former Corrie actor Adam Rickitt – who played Nick Tilsley before Ben Price took over the role – was charged with shoplifting from an Auckland supermarket in 2007. He left the store without paying for a bottle of HP sauce, some cheese and a jar of coffee. He said he forgot to pay, and it was an “honest mistake”.
And finally, EastEnders star Patsy Palmer – who of course plays Bianca Jackson – once revealed how she was given a warning for stealing goods from London toy store Hamleys. She said, “I don’t know how we got away with it.”
