U.S. T.V. Season 2012/2013: What’s been cancelled and what’s been renewed? Alcatraz , Awake, Terra Nova – Community, New Girl, 2 Broke Girls,

by Matt D

So we’ve come to the end of another TV season and with all the five major networks announcing their schedules for the new season it’s inevitable that a few shows get canned along the way. As usual it’s the new shows that have been given the boot with the networks canning a total of 26 shows that had their debut sometime in the last year. While some didn’t really stand a chance and were give the heave-ho after only a couple of instalments, such as The Playboy Club and Free Agents, there are some surprises among the freshman programmes that didn’t make it. Top of the pile is JJ Abrams’ prison mystery drama Alcatraz which wasn’t given a long time to really show what it had to offer similarly the Jason Isaacs starring thriller Awake failed to take off. Other big name debut shows that have been cancelled include the ambitious Terra Nova, the flight attendant saga Pan Am and Bones spin-off The Finder. The only shows that haven’t debuted in the last year that are being cancelled are Christian Slater’s comedy Breaking In, Kathy Bates’ legal drama Harry’s Law and most shockingly CSI: Miami which I thought would run and run. There is better news for some programmes that are being allowed to end naturally such as Desperate Housewives, Chuck, House and One Tree Hill which have now all officially finished.

There’s better news in the renewals with some NBC sitcoms thought to be leaving, such as Community and 30 Rock, being given new shorter seasons with Tina Fey’s comedy definitely ending in 2013. Also on the comedy front Cougar Town has been given a new lease of life as it moves over to TBS while new sitcoms that have been allowed to continue include The New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, Whitney, Suburgatory and Don’t Trust the B In Apartment 23 which starts on these shores next Thursday on E4. All the other big shows seemed to have been renewed however it has been revealed that the next season of Fringe will be its last. Below is a list of all of the major networks’ renewals and cancellations while I’ll be back soon to preview the new shows.

    Sad to see Awake cancelled.

Private Practice is horribly bad, do not know why that show is not cancelled.

Glad to see Castle, Fringe, and How I Met Your Mother back.

Really disappointed they cancelled, Terra Nova, Awake, Alcatraz, Missing, The Ringer, GCB, Secret Circle, Unforgettable, A Gifted Man. What the hell does it take to get them to leave shows alone for awhile? They do this every year. Why should we bother watching anything in the first year? We should just wait to see what get’s renewed then use Hulu or Netflix to watch the first season. Network channels are a waste of time.

I am really heart broken that unforgettable was not picked up.You just lost a viewer for CBS. Mean well you leave stupid shows like How I meet your Mother, 2 Broke Girls, and Two and a Half Men.These are shows that should have been cancelled and not Unforgettable,This sucks.

Well, Fox has lost me as a viewer…They’ve cancelled Terra Nova – which was a great show and The Finder also excellent. But then…they probably don’t care much what I think. Hoping the rumor about Terra Nova coming out via Netflicks is true. They were interesting, well done and well acted. Soooo sad.

Im so sad. Touch, The Finder and Terra Nova will not return. How stupid are the people who decide these things. I sincerly hope SyFy would look into these shows as they have a sci-fy kind of air. These writers are exceptional crafters and should be allowed to continue. They didnt even try them in another time slot.

I don’t watch much TV but I always watched Terra Nova and The Finder.
It seems that everytime I get interested in a series it gets cancelled. I ezpecially like Terra Nova. The cast of characters was really great, it was well written and really held my interest.
Why was it cancelled? Was it due to Critics. If that is the reason, everyone knows the the Critics don’t have the brains God gave a Duck. Just look at the Oscar winning movies….Very seldom do those movies make money. What ever the Critics don’t like always makes money.
Also, did you take into account the number of people who record Terra Nova while they are working so it may be viewed later?
And last but not least, if you go by the Neilson Ratings, you’re dumber that a rock. Their rating system is many flaws. They tried to pull me into their rating system a few years back. After reading their information packet. I just said NO.
The longer you take to make up your mind about season 2, the harder it will be to keep the same cast. If you change even one it will not be the same.
You had something good and I think you blew it.
