Unreality TV’s Top 10 returning shows of the 2013/14 season SPOILERS; American Horror Story, Glee, Big Bang Theory, more

by Nick Barnes

The new 2013/14 US TV season is nearly upon us which means our favourite TV shows are set to blow up on our TV screens for another run – which also means lazy Sunday’s filled with binge viewing. Thank lord for playback and on demand!

The likes of Glee, American Horror Story, New Girl and The Vampire Diaries are all set to return for another run in the next few weeks and we’re pretty excited – not to mention it’s as busy as ever over here at Unreality Towers! Click inside for our rundown of the top 10 RETURNING shows of the 2013/14 season.

10. Arrow

The HIT CW show is set to return October 9 and we thoroughly enjoyed the first season. It was action packed and kept you on the edge of your seat. The spoilers for the new season are also looking pretty good, along with the guest stars that have already been announced. Arrow’s co-creator Marc Guggenheim has said the show will be a lot “more focussed” during the second season, which can only be a good thing!

9. Family Guy

Family Guy is back for its 12th season on September 29 and how can we have a top 10 list without featuring the hilarious Family Guy? Not a lot is known about the new season but we know that there will be a The Simpsons/Family Guy crossover episode and one of the main characters are set to be killed off – temporarily or permanently? Only time will tell.. but everyone loves a bit of Family Guy and Stewie Griffin!

8. How I Met Your Mother

The exciting news is that How I Met Your Mother is set to return on September 23, but the sad news is that it is the final ever season of the sitcom – sad times! We know that the ninth and final season of the show will span over one full weekend – the weekend before the wedding, and we finally get to meet THE mother! Speaking about his feelings surrounding the finale, Neil Patrick Harris said: “I’m a little more part robot. I compartmentalize things and I’m not a fan of goodbyes. I don’t want to spend the time we have on the show lamenting its demise. I want to make sure we’re enjoying it as opposed to being wistful about it.”

7. 2 Broke Girls

2 Broke Girls seems to get even better with each season, Max and Caroline are the perfect team. The addition of Sophie, Han, Oleg and Earl makes the show hilarious. The girls have the aim to open up their own cup cake store, they have done it once before and as we saw in the finale of season 2, they cleared out one of the back rooms at the diner and found somewhere to give their business another go. But the question is; Will it ever work or? Or, will they be broke for the rest of their lives? I reckon the latter is more likely… 2 Broke Girls returns on September 23.

6. New Girl

New Girl is also set to return for its third season on September 17 and it all seems to be about love life. Schmidt has a HUGE decision to make about Cece and Elizabeth, Nick and Jess have hooked up and Winston loses yet another girlfriend. We also know that Jess is set to start her new job as a substitute teacher, but her fellow teachers are complete bitches and don’t like the way Jess sucks up to the headmistress… will it end well? There’s always something that goes wrong in the loft. Coach is also set to return this season, mainly because Happy Endings has been cancelled and Lamorne Morris doesn’t have a job anymore…

5. The Mindy Project

Last year, The Mindy Project launched with its freshman season and took the US (and UK audiences) by storm. Everyone loves Mindy and the fellow cast members and it seems the second season is going to be bigger than the first. Quite a few guest stars have been secured including Glenn Howerton, James Franco, Kris Humpheries and Happy Endings’ Adam Pally. The Mindy Project return on September 17 following the premiere of New Girl.

4. The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory is probably the height of comedy on USTV and does a brilliant job every year. Now in its seventh season, the sitcom isn’t showing any signs of slowing down or getting stale. We know that in the premiere episode, Leonard is still on his boat working away and he is partying it up with a load of women – will things go south between him and Penny? Will Sheldon and Amy take their romance to the next level? After all, he did the unthinkable last season and massaged her nose. It has also been revealed that Raj can now talk to women without being intoxicated – so will the brown sugar (in the words of Howard) finally be able to get himself a proper relationship? Probably not… TBBT returns on September 26.

3. The Vampire Diaries

How could we not have The Vampire Diaries on our list? The show seems to get more and more exciting each year and with a spin-off show, The Originals (which will feature in the next list) we’re even more pumped. Kat Graham who plays Bonne has promised that the premiere episode has “bloody, screaming and crying” moments! Now Katherine is no longer a vampire, how will she cope? Caroline is set to go to college, but it isn’t quite the experience she expected as someone knows a little too much about her… there’s so much happening on the show, we’re hyped for the return. The Vampire Diaries returns on October 3.

2. Glee

We’re a sucker for Glee, it’s one of our guilty pleasures here at Unreality TV – well, it’s not so much guilty anymore. So far, we know that DEMI LOVATO has been cast in the new season and will be around for approximately six episodes, and as if that wasn’t enough, Adam Lambert is set to star. The first two episodes are a two-part Beatles tribute while the third episode of the season is the Cory Monteith memorial episode after he passed away earlier this year. Glee will take a three week break from October 10, but it will be back and it promises to be an amazing season. Glee returns on September 26.

1. American Horror Story: Coven

When the new season comes around, there’s one show I quickly turn my attention to and that’s the new season of American Horror Story. The show has literally taken the US by storm over the last few years and has won multiple awards. Each season acts as a mini-season, so if you miss one or don’t quite like one of the seasons you don’t find yourself scrambling to catch up for the next season. The first two seasons have been pretty terrifying  – the second was completely twisted and sadistic. The third season which has been dubbed ‘Coven’ focusses on witches and the supernatural and will be filmed in three different locations, one of which being New Orleans. There’s a slew of new cast members along with familiar faces who have appeared in the first two seasons, and looking at the teasers that have been released thus far, we’re REALLY excited about the new season of AHS. American Horror Story: Coven premieres in October, but no specific date has yet been given.

Stay tuned for our top 10 NEW shows of the 2013/14 season which includes the likes of The Originals, The Tomorrow People and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
