Vampire Diaries season 4 spoilers: Here is will happen to Elena after season 3 finale! (VIDEO)

The Vampire Diaries season 3 finale was certainly action packed and there were more than one or two shocks along the way, however the biggest moment came when it turned out that Dr. Meredith Fell had inadvertently saved Elena’s life, following her car crash with Matt.

In the episode Elena also made her final choice between the Salvatore brothers and one central character looks set to have an evil makeover for season four. Don’t read on if you don’t want to know what happened in the thrilling final installment.

In the last episode Elena was rushed to hospital, where Dr. Meredith administered vampire blood after she sustained a head injury. It would seem then inevitable that the brunette beauty will transition into a vampire in her own right in the next series of the hit CW show, after she seemingly died in the finale but awoke in her very final scene.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, show boss Julie Plec said that she had been planning this course of action for at least two years and said it was the next natural step for her leading female.

She explained:

“The ending had been in the works for about two years. It felt like now was the time – when you’re left with no grownup, no adult supervision, no parent, no guardian – for Elena to experience the next evolution of her journey.”

On how she built up to the tragic accident and the finale situation, Plec added:

“What we really wanted to do was begin this relationship with Alaric as her guardian and mentor, and then tear that away from her at the end leaving her and her brother with nobody.”

“All the stuff that we did with having her get stronger over the course of the year, training and getting in touch with her physical self, and all the grief and all the emotion that she went through, all the compassion that she has for everybody, it will all play into next year and what kind of person and vampire she will actually be – if she should choose to see the transition through.”

When asked if Elena will been seen transforming into a vampire in the new season, Plec wasn’t giving much away but teased:

“There will be a discussion to be had about it at the beginning, but the road we’re going down is pretty balls out.”

Is anyone else ridiculously excited to see how Elena behaves as a blood sucker? Of course we already know what she will look like, much the same as pale Katherine from previous series but with straight hair we’d imagine.

Elena also made her big choice between Stefan and Damon in the season finale and after spending much of the episode tooing and froing between the pair, in the end, she revealed that while dark hair brooding Damon ‘consumed’ her, it was his gentler brother she really ‘loves.’

She tried to console the older sibling, claiming that things might have been different if she had met him first, which then prompted the flashback sequence we had been waiting for, revealing that actually, Elena had met Damon first, as he tried to console her the night her parents died. Who knew?

“You want a love that consumes you,” Damon ranted, before telling her to forget she had ever met him.

But all that paled into insignificance when Elena died, as she and Matt plummeted off the Wickery Bridge. She told Stefan to save Matt and then breathed her final breath, however it turned out that Meredith had saved the day with her vampire blood, during the beauty’s last brush with death.

So what else is ahead for season four? Well it seems that after Bonnie masterminded a bit of a switcheroo, Tyler will be on the side of darkness, now that his body is inhabited by evil Klaus.

Poor Caroline just can’t catch a break with her love interests!

I think you misunderstood Meredith and the vampire blood a little. I’m pretty sure she treated Elena after she collapsed in the last episode and Meredith found a brain hemorrhage. That’s when she treated her with vampire blood – because Meredith said Elena asked her to help her. So when Stefan came to save her at the bridge, Elena knew he had to save Matt, because she knew she had vampire blood in her system.

I disagree. I believe she allowed Stefan to save Matt, because she is a compassionate person and that is her character to put her friends’ lives before hers. She had already been saved once by him on the bridge, it was time for her to save someone else.
