We’ve Been Watching: Collision

I’ve always hated wasps; they’re useless critters and sure enough, as if I needed more reason to dislike them, it was a spawn of Satan wasp that caused the Collision.

But I suppose to give the wasp its due, it also caused love among the pile up. Mind you, one of those love affairs would’ve meant a bloke leaving his wife… mmm, every silver lining has a cloud eh?

I must say, it was a factor that took me a tad by surprise in a drama that had been filled with intrigue and what-ifs, but the wasp did in fact make its presence known in the very first episode, so the clue was there, we just had to be able to absorb seemingly useless trivia.

The scene in which the waitress tried to kill it didn’t seem especially relevant at the time but of course, with hindsight, if she’d swatted it, none of what happened would’ve happened. It’s all very interesting and chaos theory, which for me, added to the general excellence of the drama.

And I thought it was also a brilliant touch to offer an alternate story in which the crash never happened. It certainly brings home the way fate can have a massive hand in what happens to us all, even though it was of course all fiction.

In other news from the final episode, I was very glad that the teacher didn’t turn out to be a big pervert; mind you, he did turn out to be a Star Trek fan so maybe he’s not quite off the you’re-a-weirdo hook.

Another character who turned out rather differently than we were led to believe was the van man who didn’t have drugs stashed. It was rather worse because he turned out to be a people trafficker/smuggler.

Overall, if you could suspend your disbelief enough to buy the fact that so many seemingly shady characters could all be on the same road at the same moment, then you’ll have loved this drama. If on the other hand you couldn’t, then it might all have seemed a tad too far fetched.

I counted myself in the former category after episode two when semantics didn’t matter and the stories of those involved moved interestingly on.

If you missed it, you can catch it on ITV’s Player here and you’ll have the benefit of being able to watch it non-stop!
