Weird TV channels on the web

As a follow up to my article the other day about the increasing popularity and availability of Web TV, I decided I’d take a look at a few of the shows that are available and what internet sites there are on the subject and so on, and I have to say, some of the things my net search turned up were quite remarkable!

The majority are actually just podcast type shows but there again, normal TV is just pre-recorded shows, other than live TV of course, but if you’re easily offended, don’t put into a search engine ‘Live TV shows’…

One of the first things I found was a site that describes itself as being “a community led portal for prospective buyers and owners of sofas in the UK. It was set up in response to the growing demand for a UK site which dedicates itself to everything sofa related.”

What the hell??

And not only is it sofa orientated, it also has its own Sofa TV channel but on further investigation, there’s nothing on it and it’s under construction apparently but when it’s up and running, this has to be the definitive couch potato channel! A Web TV show about sofas… you couldn’t make this stuff up.

Well, the discovery of this little gem made me very curious as to what other bizarre TV channels might be out there on the web, and next, I found Taper Relief TV and if anyone can enlighten me as to what the doohickley a Taper is, please do!

The only taper I know of is a thingy that you use to light fires and BBQs! The site says it is, “… in response to the government’s proposed abolition of taper relief.” And, “Online TV channel ‘Taper Relief TV’ features information videos, event reports, and interviews with politicians, economic experts and leading entrepreneurs.”

You can also watch Mattress TV and Tennis Holidays TV and, if you’re a police officer in debt, the same network of sites has Police Debt TV. Wow. I can’t decide if the owner of these sites is a genius or a total tool. What say you?

I also found a Web TV channel dedicated to shoes, which says it, “allows users to view boutiques, tune in to fresh faces and weekly themes on the Daily Shoe and follow blogs directly from Daily Shoe hosts.” Oh my.

I then came across the slightly more sane sites, www.webtvlist.com – which has a gazillion channels of all varieties – and www.webtvhub.com That site carries a front page video about a woman who can apparently crush watermelons with her giant breasts. I didn’t actually watch to see if she could – I’d recently eaten – but it does demonstrate just what bizarreness you can find if you dig around a bit.

Having said all that, there are some perfectly reasonable and normal things to watch. For instance, Colin from Futurescape kindly provided a link to www.mumspower.com which, among other things, has its own soap opera/drama series.

There are also a plethora of info channels such as cookery and learning channels. You can even learn a new language or learn how to fix your own car. And if you’re a fan of social networking sites, Bebo are forging ahead with Web TV shows that are proving very popular… but on balance, I think I enjoyed watching the freaky weirdness more than the normal Web TV channels!

Have you found any corkingly odd Web TV show or channels? If so, please do share them with us.
