What’s On TV Tonight ~ Friday 17th October
Yippee! It’s the weekend again and so a host of brill TV shows are on. Here’s what’s worth a watch tonight…
A Question of Sport, BBC1, 7pm ~ The seemingly ageless Sue Barker hosts the quick-fire sport quiz with tonight’s guests, Olympic rowing gold medallist Zac Purchase, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder David Bentley, heavyweight boxer David Haye and England rugby union international David Strettle who join team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell.
Coronation Street, ITV1, 7.30pm ~ Tonight is THE episode we’ve all been waiting for; tonight, the much hyped murder of Liam Connor takes place but first, Carla must make a decision about marrying Tony, and will Maria get the chance to tell Liam he’s going to be a dad? Elsewhere, Amber’s romantic evening with Darryl is ruined and Kevin’s pleased when he and Sophie receive an invitation to dinner from Molly and Pam. Second episode is on at 8.30pm.
Unreported World, Channel 4, 7.35pm ~ South Africa: Body Parts for Sale – If watching Liam shuffle off the mortal coil isn’t for you, then this shocking documentary may well be. Investigating the ‘Muti Murders’ in South Africa, this documentary reveals how adults and children have been killed to provide body parts for the practice of traditional medicine. Ramita Navai speaks to affected villagers as well as to a healer who claims he tortures and kills people for his trade and would be willing to do the same to his own children or relatives. Nice guy… can’t quite see how he can call himself a ‘healer’ though!
Claim and Shame: Tonight ITV1, 8pm ~ This report on the reluctance of insurance companies to pay out on claims for illness, injury and death is introduced by Fiona Foster who talks to aggrieved customers who feel they are being cheated by the financial giants. Some of the shocking stories uncovered include a woman who had to campaign for three years before receiving payment following the death of her husband.
Police Interceptors, Five, 8pm ~ Documentary series profiling the work of a high-speed police interception unit in Essex. Tonight, the team are called to the heart of the Essex countryside where they face a race against time to rescue a man pinned beneath a tractor. The air support crew are called out at night to hunt down a car thief in Southend and the interceptors pursue a rogue driver around the back alleys of north-east London. A fascinating insight into police work.
Eastenders, BBC1, 8pm ~ Tamwar shocks his mother by revealing his comedic ambition and Ian is decidedly unimpressed by Jane’s stand-up routine which targets his personality. Jack’s forced to take control when an unrelenting Ronnie tries to make him confess his love for her and Max continues with his attempts to charm Tanya.
Wire In The Blood, ITV1, 9pm ~ From the Defeated – Part Two: Tonight, the serial killing of young men comes to a halt but the abduction of a young widow indicates that the perpetrator has broadened his ambitions… and murder isn’t his only motivation. Psychopath Michael makes good his escape from the secure unit, wearing the prison chaplin’s clothes and he’s got Tony lined up as his next victim.
Ugly Betty, E4, 9pm ~ Jump: Gio makes Betty a romantic offer just as Henry pops back into her life with a proposal of his own. Meanwhile, at the charity softball game of the year, Wilhelmina tries to strike out a rival magazine’s star player. An orphaned boy from France turns up at Mode with an amazing claim and Hilda learns some shocking news about Coach Diaz. Last in series, guest starring Naomi Campbell and Lindsay Lohan.
Footloose, Sky 2, 9pm ~ A great bit of nostalgia with this film about a rebellious hip-swinging student from the city who moves to a small religious town where he clashes with a fire-and-brimstone preacher who’s banned dancing because he regards it as immoral. Stars a very young looking Kevin Bacon alongside Lori Singer, John Lithgow, Chris Penn, Dianne Wiest and Sarah Jessica Parker before she came over all SATC.
Alan Carr’s Celebrity Ding Dong, Channel 4, 10pm ~ Guest panellists Christopher Biggins, Tony Blackburn, Sophie Anderton and David Gest join Alan tonight and attempt to answer a series of questions about the world of celebrity and showbusiness gossip. Very funny show.
The Chamber, ITV3, 10pm ~ This 1996 film is about an ambitious lawyer who pulls out all the stops to win a reprieve for his white supremacist grandfather – who’s a convicted killer languishing on Death Row – for his part in a racist 1967 bombing which claimed the lives of two Jewish children. Courtroom thriller based on the book by John Grisham, starring Gene Hackman, Chris O’Donnell and Faye Dunaway. It’s one of my favourite books and I’ll be watching to see how the film compares.
Call 911, Discovery Channel, 10pm ~ No Way Out: This documentary series focuses on America’s emergency services. Tonight, a kidnapped woman calls 911 from the boot of a car and a mother and her four children are trapped when their home is consumed by fire. Followed at 10.30pm by another in the series, The Glendale Shootout.
Well that’s it for Friday night’s telly recommendations – have a great weekend!
