What’s On TV Tonight ~ Friday 19th September
For those of us spending Friday night in with a takeaway and few beers – well, that’s my Friday night project anyway – let’s take a look at what entertainment the telly’s got to offer…
Emmerdale, ITV1, 7pm ~ Tonight’s show sees Debbie worrying that Sarah’s going to be second best now that Andy and Jo are expecting their own baby – not that they really are but Andy’s announcing it to everyone – and confides to Eli that she’d like to have Sarah back but wouldn’t get custody as she’s single. Eli, in some act of divine intervention, then finds an engagement ring in the back of his taxi… you can guess the rest!
Elsewhere, everyone’s getting sick of Nicola; Rodney refuses to have anything to do with his duplicitous daughter and Louise is back in the village.
Coronation Street, ITV1, 7.30 & 8.30pm ~ Tonight’s first dose of Street life sees John kidnapping the tarty vamp Rosie. Fiz still won’t have him back and his anger about all that went wrong between them becomes overwhelming when he sees Rosie flirting with someone, so – as you do – he kidnaps her.
Elsewhere, Janice sneaks out of work to check the girls syndicate lottery ticket and is delighted to learn from Leanne that they’ve won more than £24,000, but when she returns to work she’s furious to discover that nobody covered for her with Carla so she decides to keep news of the win to herself.
Liam rings Carla on the premise of talking shop and Vernon’s overjoyed when a record producer wants to buy one of his songs. Maybe he’s one of those people who sells his clients work to anyone wanting in-elevator tunes or that annoying supermarket muzak.
In the second episode, Rosie’s still locked in John’s car as he drives the terrified girl around Weatherfield. She pleads with him to let her go but he’s lost everything he cares about because of her so he wants to make her sorry. Perhaps he intends to bore her to death?
Back on the street, Leanne and Janice scheme to keep the lottery win for themselves, Liam and Carla can hardly keep their hands off each other and Vernon is disappointed when he finds Liz and Harry in a steamy clinch.
An Island Parish, BBC2, 7.30pm ~ The Start of a Long Journey: If soaps aren’t your thang, take a look at the new series of this show set on the Isles of Scilly. Everyone’s worried about the credit crunch but Sophie and Mark are busy planning their wedding and Sophie’s also off to London to promote tourism on the Isles of Scilly. Guy Scott, the Methodist minister, is busy with his meals on wheels deliveries while the Reverend David helps deal with tourists and Toby the baker wants a curry.
This is a lovely insight into life on the Isles of Scilly and as well as meeting some great characters, we get to see some stunning scenery too.
My Boyfriend The Suffolk Strangler, Channel 4, 7.35pm ~ This documentary by Tanya Freeman follows the real life drama of Pam Wright whose partner Steve was found guilty of murdering five women earlier this year.
Part of the First Cut and Generation Next season, this true story follows Pam for two months and sees how she dealt with the news that someone she thought was just Mr Ordinary and who she loved, was in fact a serial killer operating in the Ipswich area. Even though Pam had nothing to do with the murders and didn’t know her partner was the killer, we see how she’s forced to go into a police safe house and subsequently how she tries to put her life back together.
A Place In The Sun: Home Or Away, Channel 4, 8pm ~ Despite having a brief reprieve on the weather front over the last few days, autumn is fast approaching and if you’re considering buying a property in the sun to get away from UK winters, you might pick up a few tips on tonight’s show. In this episode, John and Gill Farquas Blake try to decide whether to upgrade to a large family house in the Cotswolds or stay where they are which would mean they have enough money to buy a holiday home in Portugal. Property experts Jonnie Irwin and Jasmine Harman show the couple several properties in a bid to help them make their decision. I know which I’d do…
Eastenders, BBC1, 8pm ~ Tanya’s growing more suspicious about Jack which is exactly what Max wants. He reminds Jack that Tanya still doesn’t know his secret but promises him that she soon will. Tanya meanwhile, with Lauren in tow, has gone to Selena’s hotel but on arriving she finds that Selena’s already left. Disappointed she’s missed the chance to find out what’s going on, she heads back to the Square but Jack’s already seen her. What’s he going to do about her spying on him?
The pair later have a confrontation during which Tanya angrily tells Jack that if he won’t tell her what really happened to Penny, they can’t continue as a couple. She tells him she won’t be involved with another liar and eventually, Jack tells her the whole story. In what has become typical of Tanya, she storms off having told Jack that she can’t believe he lied to her.
Well Tan, this is what you get for keeping it in the family; brothers are going to be alike aren’t they? Mind you, I’d rather have Jack in a flat out choice of siblings any day!
Elsewhere, Stacey and Danielle pretend to be ‘Kelly and Kerry’ when they meet two guys in the park and later at R&R, they bump into the same blokes. One of them makes a move on Stacey and despite Danielle reminding her she’s married, Stacey’s determined to have a good time. She’s the original good time had by all really isn’t she? Dopey Danielle also tells Stacey that she knows that it’s her that Callum fancies. Bradley then texts Stacey so she has to choose between a feet-up-and-telly evening with her husband or a night on the town. Which will it be?
Noel’s HQ, Sky One, 8pm ~ Noel Edmonds presents this show in which selfless acts carried out by members of the public are rewarded. Not only that but Noel names and shames the selfish and greedy so it could well be worth a look just to see the somewhat innocuous Noel with his dander up!
As well as giving life-changing gifts, Noel also fixes it for some of the UK’s most deprived areas to undergo a complete facelift. It’s a show that combines many of the elements of Noel’s Christmas heart warmer stuff and a bit of Extreme Makeover thrown in. There’s also hidden camera stunts, celebrity challenges and competitions.
Wire In The Blood, ITV1, 9pm, ~ Unnatural Vices, Pt 2 of 2: Tonight sees the conclusion to this drama in which Chris Collins admits he hid the fact that he had a relationship with the killer’s latest victim and is worried that he’s now a potential victim. Dr Tony Hill, played by Robson Green, must delve into the sordid world of Bradfield’s S&M scene – which must hurt him more than it hurts us – and realises he must protect Alex from learning the true horror of the crimes. Then, as if he doesn’t have enough to do, his temporary assistant goes missing so he must outwit the killer alone.
Wife Swap, E4, 9pm ~ Tonight’s episode is a little unusual as it features a swap between a woman who doesn’t believe in same-sex relationships and a gay couple. Andy Jordan lives with his partner Jason Lombard and his 17-year-old daughter Ayesha. He swaps his life for a week with traditional housewife and mum of two, Nevena Senior. There’s bound to be tears and tantrums in both households as Nevena must get to grips with Ayesha’s spoilt ways as well as her temporary new gay partner Jason. Meanwhile, her husband Brian has to learn to take orders, which he doesn’t like doing.
The Tudors, BBC2, 9pm ~ This programme is pretty much like Wife Swap but it’s set in Tudor times with the notorious bed hopping King Henry VIII still not satisfied with just the one woman. Tonight, Jane Seymour is made lady-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn, but the Queen doesn’t approve. Jane’s a temptress who wears virginal white but allows her boobies to thrust out of her dresses in a most un-virginal manner. This attracts the attention of Henry who tells her, “I ask only one thing; that you allow me to serve and to worship you.” Smooth talking snake…
Later, Henry is seriously injured in a jousting match so the court must consider who would succeed him if he dies. Their decision isn’t aided by the fact that Anne has miscarried another pregnancy.
Ricky Gervais: Fame, Channel Four, 10pm ~ ‘The Office’ star, Ricky Gervais, is on great form tonight in this show that contains highlights of his massively popular stand-up tour. This was the fastest-selling live comedy tour in UK history and in it, Ricky takes a funny-side look at fame and as ever, puts a whole new slant on day to day life.
That’s it for today folks so have a fun Friday and I’ll be back with more telly highlights tomorrow.
