What’s on TV Tonight ~ Monday 22nd September

Well the start of the new working week has begun, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer this Monday night on TV…

Unconditional Love, Film Four, 6.40pm ~ This 2002 comedy drama has a pretty impressive cast list that includes Kathy Bates, Rupert Everett, Dan Ackroyd, Richard Briers and Julie Andrews.

Grace Beasley – Kathy Bates – is devastated when her husband Max leaves her so to cheer herself up, she plans to go to see her favourite singer in concert. However, the singer is murdered before the concert takes place so Grace decides to fly to Wales to attend the funeral where she quickly forms an unlikely friendship with her late hero’s gay lover. Directed by PJ Hogan. Makes a change from soaps if nothing else! Speaking of which…

Emmerdale, ITV1, 7pm ~ In tonight’s farmyard drama, Paul has to take Nicola in when Val throws her out; Eli’s keen to get the proposal just right while Jamie suspects Louise is seeing someone else.

Property Ladder, More4, 7pm ~ If neither of the above appeals to you, try taking a look at this reality show about people who make money from property. In tonight’s show, Sarah Beeny introduces Jonathan from London who has a budget of £20,000 pounds to fully renovate a house in Sydenham. He soon realises however that his budget is woefully inadequate. I love these shows if only for the point and laugh factor; I recall one property owner who bought what amounted to a shell of a house and expected £10,000 to cover the cost of renovations. I nearly wore my pointing finger out that night.

My Family, BBC1, 7.30pm ~ The Book of Love: This sitcom has very much lost it for me; I enjoyed it in the early days but now it seems contrived and OTT, however many of you still love it so here’s what tonight’s slice of Harper family life is about – Michael starts a booking agency for Roger’s exclusive use, Susan hopes to take a step up in the literary world by attending a neighbour’s book club and Ben tries to stake a claim on the sofa.

Coronation Street, ITV1, 7.30pm ~
Clarissa grows suspicious of Liz and Harry, Rosie’s still in a hissy fit about her parents not believing her story that John kidnapped her and Janice and Leanne are girls with a plan. Let’s hope that stupid Harry, Liz, Clarissa storyline is drawing to a close now.

Eastenders, BBC1, 8pm ~ Patrick accidentally defrosts the freezer at the Minute Mart but rather stupidly sells off the defrosted food. Bianca decides she wants to marry Tony but Whitney has other ideas while Stacey tries to convince herself that she wants a baby with Bradley. Suzy makes a shocking discovery about her brother Max and Pat temporarily moves in with the Mitchells.

Freaky Eaters, BBC3, 8pm ~ Addicted to Bread: Series in which nutritionist Natalie Savona and psychological coach Stephen Briers help people overcome their weird eating habits and food phobias. Tonight’s episode is about Joanne Stappard, a young woman who loves to party with her friends but who feels she’s becoming isolated because of her ‘dark secret’ – she’s addicted to bread and eats hardly anything else. An operation during her childhood to repair her cleft palate should have put an end to her eating problems, but was actually just the beginning. Personally, I don’t really see why her liking bread so much is a ‘dark secret’ – it’s not like she’s eating the heads of goats or something – but I can see it’s not nutritionally a good plan. Guess I’ll just have to watch to see what the outcome is!

Airline, ITV2, 8pm ~
Tonight’s dose of this usually fraught reality show is about the bad luck encountered by many passengers – and the long suffering airline staff – on Friday the 13th. A motorway pile-up causes problems for passengers in Luton while the Parke family’s holiday to Nice may not go ahead because their daughter’s passport has expired. Will French immigration let her into the country without a valid passport? The Redmond family arrive in Belfast, but strike action at Gatwick means their baby’s car seat does not while in Inverness, former England international footballer and Charlton legend, Albert ‘Sailor’ Brown, is on his way to the team’s centenary dinner.

Place of Execution, ITV1, 9pm ~ From the writer who brought us Wire In The Blood comes this new drama which revolves around the unexplained disappearance of 13 year old girl in 1963. With flashbacks and present day storylines running parallel, we see what happened in the past and how the efforts of journalist, Catherine Heathcote – played by Juliet Stevenson – to make a documentary brings secrets from the past into the present that might otherwise have stayed buried forever.

Ross Kemp: A Kenya Special, Sky One, 9pm
~ In tonight’s special episode, Ross visits Kenya to investigate the notorious ‘Mungiki’ gang who are reputed to be the most dangerous gang in Africa. The group has been blamed for a great deal of the violence that killed more than 1,500 people and left the country on the brink of civil war following last year’s disputed election. Viewers have a choice of start times. Fair dos to Ross, he’s got a set of steel ones! I don’t think I’d be venturing voluntarily into the heart of all these violent gangs.

New Tricks, BBC1, 9pm ~ Diamond Geezers: Drama series featuring an unconventional bunch of ex-police officers who’ve been brought out of retirement to investigate unsolved, ‘cold’ crimes. In tonight’s episode, the team go after vicious criminal Chopper Hadley, who’s back in the country for just one week. Jack feels responsible for not preventing a victim’s death while Gerry finds that his past indiscretions are coming back to haunt him. Stars Dennis Waterman, who I still can’t see as anyone other than Arthur Daley’s mate. Oh god I’m old.

From Dusk Till Dawn, Channel 4, 10pm ~ This violence ridden and blood soaked film stars Quentin Tarantino alongside George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis and Salma Hayek.

A trigger-happy crook and his ruthless brother take a preacher and his children hostage in a bid to get across the border into the refuge of Mexico. They hold up in a bar that’s already filled with a host of dodgy characters but they soon realise that it’s also inhabited by vampires. I think I may well have been to that bar actually.

Alan Carr: Tooth Fairy Live, E4, 10pm ~ If you missed this last time it was on earlier this month, don’t miss your chance to watch it tonight. His hilarious stage show, filmed live at the Hammersmith Apollo, sees Alan talking about his childhood and about the funny things he encounters in every day life. He’s one of those comedians to whom it comes naturally to be funny and nearly every minute of this show is just that.

The Royle Family, UKTV Gold, 10.20pm ~ Anthony’s Birthday: The last viewing suggestion tonight is this classic episode which sees our Ant’nee bringing his new girlfriend Emma round to meet the family. Nana’s horrified to learn that Emma’s a vegetarian and suggests she should have a bit of ham by way of consolation while the rest of the family can’t figure out why an attractive girl like her would want to bother with Anthony.

So that’s Monday done and dusted! See you tomorrow for more top telly tips.
