What’s On TV Tonight ~ Saturday 18th October
It’s the battle of the reality shows tonight as Strictly and X Factor go head to head in a battle for viewer numbers, but for those of you who aren’t in the least bit interested, we’ve got lots of recommendations for what else to watch tonight during primetime…
A Place in the Sun, Discovery Travel & Living, 6pm ~ Lanzarote: If you’re dreaming of a warmer climate, then Discovery T&L has a whole evening dedicated to this show. In this episode, Steve Cox and Varinder Dhami check out a resort apartment and a countryside villa. Presented by Amanda Lamb.
Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1, 6.45pm ~ The pressure increases tonight as the couples compete against each other for the first time. The 12 remaining teams dance either a samba or an American smooth, during which two lifts can be performed in a bid to impress the judges and secure the viewers votes. Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly present. The results show is tomorrow at 8.10pm.
Harry Hill’s TV Burp, ITV1, 6.55pm ~ The big-collars, big-spectacles funnyman returns with a new series of his comedy TV review, and as usual he’ll be subjecting the past week’s viewing to his surreal brand of scrutiny. TV Burp is running for a bumper 25 episodes in this series. Tonight, with both The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing back on TV, and all the big soaps in full flow, there’s a rich seam of TV entertainment for the picking.
NASA’s Greatest Missions, Discovery Channel, 7pm ~ Landing the Eagle: Documentary film in which NASA engineers and astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins discuss the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. Featuring amazing newly remastered footage of the historic mission.
The X Factor, ITV1, 7.25pm ~ The second of the live rounds sees the hopefuls performing songs by Michael Jackson, and tensions are bound to be high after last week’s first vote-off. The decision as to who will be in the sing-off in the second show is down to the viewers, but the singers will still be out to impress the judges as they’re the ones who ultimately decide who’ll stay and who’ll go. The result of tonight’s phone vote is at 10.10pm.
Agatha Christie’s Marple, ITV3, 7.25pm ~ A Murder Is Announced: Brilliant, gentle escapism in this period drama which tonight features Miss Marple finding an unusual message in Chipping Cleghorn’s local newspaper. It reveals details of a forthcoming murder and, while at first glance it looks like a practical joke, the information proves to be deadly accurate. Miss Marple helps Inspector Craddock with his investigation and the pair soon uncover several likely suspects in the village. Starring Geraldine McEwan, with Zoe Wanamaker, Elaine Paige, Virginia McKenna, Cherie Lunghi – who’s also on Strictly Come Dancing tonight – and Frances Barber.
The Boy Who Will Never Grow, Sky 3, 8pm ~ The sad but inspiring story of nine-year-old Jack Bird, who suffers from Morquio’s disease; a condition leaving him unable to grow. Told in the form of a video diary, the programme follows his daily life and a visit to meet a fellow sufferer, an adult woman standing at a little over three feet tall. His parents also discuss the financial and emotional burden they bear as a result of their son’s illness.
Timewatch: Young Victoria, BBC2, 8.10pm ~ Kate Williams explores the hidden story of the monarch who brought England into the modern age. She examines Victoria’s battle to become Queen, in which she fought against her mother, the Duchess of Kent, who wanted to ascend to the throne herself – all at a time when the country was on the brink of revolution
Casualty, BBC1, 9pm ~ There and Back Again: Jeff tries to shield Dixie from the abuse she faces, clearly worried about his colleague. Abs spends his last day in a terrible mood, which is lifted only by a visit from Tess, while Adam is led astray by the woman he woke up in bed with and makes a mistake – for which Toby takes the blame.
Failure To Launch, Channel 4, 9pm ~ TV premiere of this romantic comedy starring Matthew McConaughey as a man in his thirties who’s still living with his parents, whether they like it or not. Also starring Kathy Bates and Zooey Deschanel.
The 100 Greatest Scary Moments, E4, 9pm ~ Comedian Jimmy Carr presents the first of a two-part countdown featuring scary moments from films, TV shows, adverts and real-life encounters, as voted for by viewers. Including interviews with Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan, A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Robert Englund, EastEnders actress Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo Mitchell), and Dave Prowse, better known to sci-fi fans as dastardly Sith lord Darth Vader. Concludes tomorrow.
Sanctuary, ITV4, 9.25pm ~ First chance to see the new sci-fi series starring Amanda Tapping. The enigmatic Dr Helen Magnus recruits Will Zimmerman to join her in the quest to study and protect strange creatures that secretly populate our world. Will is drawn further into Magnus’s mysterious world and finds himself confronting his oldest fear. Forces converge on the target of their hunt, including someone from Magnus’s distant past.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Five, 9.50pm ~ Grissom’s Divine Comedy: The burned body of a witness in a high-profile trial is found in a car but the autopsy proves the cause of death was a gun shot wound. As the court case approaches its conclusion, the team must identify the murderer within 52 hours, or the accused goes free and double jeopardy means he cannot be retried. All of this, and Grissom is battling the flu. US crime drama, starring William Petersen.
In Good Company, Channel 4, 10.50pm ~ Another TV premiere and in this movie we follow the story of an executive who’s life spirals into chaos when he suffers the indignity of being demoted at work, leaving him as second-in-command to a young upstart… but that’s just the beginning of his woes. Offbeat comedy, starring Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace, Scarlett Johansson and Marg Helgenberger.
