What’s On TV Tonight ~ Saturday 25th October
I’m so fed up with Strictly and X Factor clashing! I’m sure it’s on purpose and so unnecessary given that most people will just record one or the other but for those of us who don’t have Sky+ it’s really irritating!
OK, rant over… anyway, there are lots of great shows on tonight so let’s take a look at them.
Merlin, BBC1, 5.50pm ~ A Remedy to Cure All Ills: This show is rapidly achieving a devoted group of fans and tonight, Morgana succumbs to a mysterious illness and a new physician arrives in Camelot just in time to cure her. Uther is impressed by the stranger’s abilities but Gaius becomes suspicious and enlists the help of his friend Geoffrey of Monmouth to find out more about the newcomer.
Totally You’ve Been Framed, ITV1, 6.15pm ~ Yes I know we’ve seen it all before and YBF are doing it to death now, but it’s still worth watching for Harry Hill’s commentary that’s often far funnier than the clips. Tonight’s selection of clips feature comical kids and hilarious animals including the worst Jedi in the world, a dog that makes a splash in a hot tub and a woman who finds herself getting goosed by a goose. Last in the series.
Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1, 6.35pm ~ The remaining couples take to the floor once more, dancing either a romantic Viennese waltz or a dramatic paso doble. They’ll be hoping to win over judges Len Goodman, Arlene Phillips, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood and secure the viewers votes in a bid to keep their places in the competition. The results show is tomorrow at 7.15pm.
Stephen Fry in America, BBC2, 7.10pm ~ The Deep South: The writer and actor continues his journey across America in a taxi to explore each of the 50 states. In addition to making an uncomfortable trip underground to learn about West Virginia’s coal-mining industry, he flies over North Carolina in a hot-air balloon and spends Thanksgiving in Georgia, before resting in Alabama to enjoy a sporting event.
Harry Hill’s TV Burp, ITV1, 7.15pm ~ Harry’s second show of the night in which he takes a look at the funny events of the week and makes unfunny events extremely amusing with the application of his own brand of wit.
The X Factor, ITV1, 7.15pm ~ The gorgeous Dermot O’Leary presents big band night, traditionally a real test for the hopefuls as they sing a swing classic accompanied by a full orchestra. The remaining 10 acts will have to raise their game as they perform for those all-important votes while also trying to impress the judges who will later decide the fate of the two acts with the fewest votes. The results show is on at 10.10pm.
Most Haunted Live: Village of the Damned, Living, 8pm ~ New series of the spook hunt show starts tonight and will doubtless be in dramatic fashion and is on for a whopping four hours! Yvette Fielding and the crew undertake a seven-night investigation in the remote Welsh village of Denbigh. On the first night, they’ll conduct a ‘time slip’ experiment in a former asylum that served the area for nearly 200 years before closing in 1995. Two of the team will be strapped into straitjackets and placed in padded cells as a seance is held to entice the spirits of former patients to appear. Speaking as someone who used to be part of a group of paranormal investigators, this show is both intriguing and alternately laughable but it’s definitely good fun to watch them all being scared witless when something that’s not scripted happens!
Timewatch: Ten Pound Poms, BBC2, 8.10pm ~ During the post-war years of the 1950s and 60s, one million Brits were sold the dream of a modern British way of life in Australia and were seduced by a fare of just £10 on the condition they stayed there for at least two years. Nine people who were part of one of the largest planned migrations of the 20th-century recall their experiences and provide a fascinating history of their journey.
Casualty, BBC1, 8.45pm ~ The Evil That Men Do: Dixie has a brick thrown through her window but worse is to follow. After the patient overdose last week, Jordan launches an investigation, but it only reveals how much the team thinks of Adam and Charlie surprises Tess with his preferred choice to replace Abs.
The Secret Millionaire, Channel 4, 9pm ~ Property investor Gill Fielding visits London’s East End where she lives anonymously as part of the community for 10 days and has a life-changing experience, before deciding who is worthy of her cash. Now maybe I’m just a cynic but anyone who suddenly shows up at the door of some worthy cause or another with a camera crew in tow would make me think ‘ooo, Secret Millionaire’ possibly. I think this show was only effective when it was new; it’s lost the surprise factor now but nonetheless, if it’s helping causes who wouldn’t otherwise be helped, good on it.
Road Wars, Sky One, 9pm ~ On tonight’s show, rowdy tourists cause problems in Reading, a routine stop gets out of hand for police in Slough, and an officer has a lucky escape after being in a head-on collision. Plus, disturbing footage of a pursuit involving six patrol cars, a helicopter and three stingers.
Man On Fire, BBC3, 9.30pm ~ This star studded film is about a former US government operative who’s battling with alcoholism but nonetheless agrees to take a job as bodyguard to the daughter of a wealthy businessman. However, when she’s abducted, he vows to exact an explosive revenge on the kidnappers. All-action thriller set in the blistering heat of Mexico City, starring Denzel Washington, Christopher Walken, Radha Mitchell and Dakota Fanning.
Arena: The Agony and Ecstasy of Phil Spector, BBC2, 9.40pm ~ This is an extremely rare interview in which the celebrated music producer looks back over his fifty year career, discussing his approach to the recording process and explaining how he created the ‘wall of sound’ technique on which his fame primarily rests. The documentary includes clips from his 2007 trial when he faced charges in connection with the death of actress Lana Clarkson.
Saw, Channel 4, 10pm ~ In this excellent horror thriller, detectives hunt a killer who kidnaps his victims and forces them to play sadistic games with life-or-death consequences. Meanwhile, two strangers wake to find themselves chained to pipes in a filthy, derelict bathroom, at the mercy of the madman. Written by and starring Leigh Whannell, alongside Cary Elwes, Danny Glover and Dina Meyer. The sequel can be seen tomorrow at 10pm, while a fifth annual installment was released in cinemas yesterday in the run-up to Hallowe’en. It’s got elements of the American slasher thing about it but there are also some genuinely tense moments. Good stuff to scare yourself witless before bed!
The Dark, BBC1, 11pm ~ If Saw is a little to blood-and-gore for you, give this supernatural horror thriller a whirl; you’ll be just as scared without throwing up! A youngster seemingly drowns while visiting a remote area of Wales, but her mother becomes convinced she’s actually trapped in a shadowy alternative reality enshrined in local mythology and vows to do whatever it takes to rescue her. Starring Maria Bello and Sean Bean with Richard Elfyn and Maurice Roeves. Not sure who the other actors are but it’s worth watching just because Sean Bean’s in it!
So that’s it for our telly recommendations for tonight. Have a great Saturday and we’ll see you tomorrow. Don’t forget we’ll have all the coverage from The X Factor and Strictly as well as live chat on our message boards.
