What’s On TV Tonight ~ Saturday 27th September

As is the way of Saturday’s, there’s a lot of reality TV on tonight but we’ve picked out a few little gems for you to watch if you aren’t a fan of people fame hunting on national TV! There are some really good films on too so you might want Sky+ at the ready…

Merlin, BBC1, 6pm ~ Knight Valiant arrives in Camelot to compete in the annual sword-fighting tournament and faces Arthur in the final. Merlin realises the combatant has a cunning plan to beat his opponents that could mean death for the prince but King Uther doesn’t believe him.

You’ve Been Framed! Family Special, ITV, 6pm ~ The very funny narration from Harry Hill makes this show worth watching for me. Tonight’s Framed is a special family edition with camcorder crackers including a hamster that does chin-ups, a grany on a pogo stick and a wedding on a bungee rope.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Five, 6pm ~ This comedy is something of a pensioner now but that doesn’t stop it being extremely funny. It stars Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder as a blind man and his deaf friend who go on the run to clear their names following their imprisonment on a trumped-up murder charge. A host of crazy characters are soon hot on their trail, determined to get their hands on a top-secret microchip – which the duo don’t even know they’ve got. Highly recommended film.

Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1, 7pm ~ Tonight, Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly introduce the eight celebrity women who will perform either the salsa or the foxtrot to stay in the competition. TV presenter Christine Bleakley, models Jodie Kidd and Lisa Snowdon, actress Cherie Lunghi, singers Rachel Stevens and Heather Small, and former EastEnders Gillian Taylforth and Jessie Wallace will all be hoping to impress the judges and the public. The male dancers will perform a group merengue dance. The result can be seen tomorrow at 8pm.

The X Factor, ITV1, 7.45pm ~ The first of two shows that follow the successful contestants from the last six weeks of auditions to the boot-camp stage of the contest. This year, boot camp is being held at London’s O2 arena. Judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Louis Walsh and Dannii Minogue set the wannabes a series of challenges to put them through their paces as the singers move a step closer to the live stages and a recording contract. Continues tomorrow at 7pm. I’m so annoyed that Strictly and X Factor overlap! X Factor starts twenty minutes before Strictly ends so we have to miss either the end or the start of one of them. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Mr Bean, Paramount Comedy 2, 7pm ~
If you want to avoid the all singing all dancing terrestrial channels, you could instead what four back-to-back episodes of Mr Bean. In the first, Mr Bean sits an exam, but when he realises he’s studied the wrong maths equations, it’s already too late. He also tries to stifle a sneeze in church in his own inimitable style. Starring Rowan Atkinson.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Channel 4, 7.30pm ~ If you loved watching Merlin, then you may well want to settle down for the evening and watch this epic saga which is the last in the LOTR trilogy. Frodo and Sam battle against all odds to reach Mount Doom with the scheming Gollum, while their friends take up arms once more and face the terrible force of Sauron’s army in an apocalyptic battle. With the odds stacked against them, there’s little hope of victory and Middle-Earth may be destined to fall under the tyrannical rule of the Dark Lord. Stars Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen.

One Foot In The Grave, UKTV Gold, 8.35pm ~ The Secret of the Seven Sorcerers:

Sticking with the theme of wizardry and tyrannical old men, tonight’s trip down TV memory lane sees Victor getting himself in a tricky situation thanks to a conjuring trick which proves to be far from magic and goes very wrong. Meanwhile, busybody Mrs Warboys is convinced that her husband is having an affair. Starring Richard Wilson and Annette Crosbie. Gentle comedy that still raises a few titters after all these years.

Timewatch: Stonehenge, BBC2, 8.05pm ~
New series. This documentary follows the fascinating investigation into whether Stonehenge was used as a place of healing in the Bronze Age, as opposed to its more commonly assumed status of a burial ground. After the first dig at the site in more than fifty years, the archaeologists use forensic testing and carbon dating methods to see if they can find evidence to support their theory.

Casualty, BBC1, 8.55pm ~
The super-arrogant but very gorgeous Nick Jordan (Michael French) is already having an effect on the staff at Holby, although not necessarily a good one. He’s managed to make Ruth buck up her ideas and self generally too; she gets more glamorous by the minute! Adam’s still practising his drop dead stare on Jordan and he gets ample time to work on it tonight because the two clash over the handling of both of this week’s cases. First, they argue about a man whose foot was cut off during a fight, and then again over an elderly woman who may have taken an overdose. It turns out that Adam could be justified in being suspicious of his charismatic boss, as we find out during the closing scenes when Jordan re-reads and then discards a letter . . .

The Island, BBC1, 9.15pm ~ This film is about a group of survivors – of an ecological disaster – as they live exclusively inside their protected community in the year 2019. However, each hope to win a ticket to an idyllic island in a regular lottery draw but when a curious inhabitant discovers that the restricted society is a mask for more sinister activities, he begins searching for the truth. Explosive sci-fi thriller, starring Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Sean Bean and Steve Buscemi. Continues after ITV News.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Five, 9.45pm
~ Cockroaches: Much spun-off drama series about a team of forensic investigators in Las Vegas. After a police chase results in the discovery of two corpses, the investigation that follows uncovers sinister goings-on at a mob-owned strip club where Warrick crosses the professional line when he gets involved with one of the dancers.

Scream 2, Film Four, 10.45pm ~ This sequel to – unsurprisingly, Scream – is a good one to watch if you like to scare yourself then giggle about it! It’s been two years since the notorious Woodsboro murders and the movie ‘Stab’ – based on news reporter Courteney Cox’s book – premieres in town, but it seems that another serial killer has adopted the ghost mask and embarks on a campaign of murder while survivors of the first film – Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette – attempt to get to the bottom of the terrifying mystery. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jada Pinkett Smith (Will Smith’s wife) and Jamie Kennedy are among the potential victims Directed by Wes Craven. A great popcorn and safe cushion to hide behind movie!

So that’s our top telly tips for today but whatever you’re doing tonight, have a good ‘un!
