What’s On TV Tonight ~ Sunday 28th September
It’s another great night in this Sunday and in the 9pm slot, we’re especially spoiled for choice, with two great dramas and several films to choose from, but here’s what we reckon might keep you out of mischief tonight…
The Great Russian Art Boom, Channel 4, 6.30pm ~ If you’re feeling all high brow tonight, this is the show for you! Writer Marcel Theroux gets access to the notoriously private world of Russia’s super-wealthy to investigate the enormous impact they are having on the art establishment. Meeting experts and collectors, he discovers Russian art is no longer a niche market, with the wealthy elite reclaiming their heritage by purchasing pieces that were sold off during the Communist era.
The X Factor, ITV1, 7pm ~ It promises to be another corker of a show tonight as the remaining acts return to the O2 stage for the second stage of Boot camp. Each auditionee has one more chance to shine before judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh decide which of the contestants will make it through to the next round.
Monkey Business, Animal Planet, 7pm ~ I absolutely love this series and it’s become even more poignant since Jim Cronin, the founder of Monkey World, died of cancer last year. Tonight, Lulu the one-armed chimp arrives from Cyprus and isn’t happy with her new playmates. She’s never had contact with other apes before but as she gets used to life at Monkey World, she enjoys her new found freedom. Meanwhile, the overweight stump-tailed macaques go on a diet and the seven gibbons brought over from Taiwan are doing well, thanks to the care and attention given by Zoe and the staff. Another episode follows this one.
Heartbeat, ITV1, 8pm ~ Oscar’s Birthday: This is the last in the current series of the sixties Yorkshire drama and tonight, two new residents put PC Mason in an awkward position both professionally and personally. Meanwhile, the village rally round to celebrate Blaketon’s birthday but he gets more than he bargained for when Gina goes into labour.
Strictly Come Dancing, BBC1, 8pm ~ Results Show: We’ll find out which of the celeb girls will be the first to leave the show tonight and the Sugababes and Jill Halfpenny perform live too. The two female celebrities who least impressed the judges and voting public last night take to the dance floor with their partners once again. Judges Len Goodman, Arlene Phillips, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli will then decide which of the girl celebrities just can’t cut it on the dance floor. My guess is Jessie Wallace but we’ll see!
Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Sky One, 8pm ~ If you fancy a giggle tonight, this film has lots. Mel Brooks captures the camp side of the Sherwood Forest legend in this spoof comedy, which came just two years after Kevin Costner had given the legend a more movie outing. The plot finds the legendary hero taking on the evil Sheriff of Rottingham, while also trying to woo Maid Marian. With Carey Elwes, Richard Lewis, Tracey Ullman, Amy Yasbeck, Patrick Stewart and Isaac Hayes.
Tess of the D’Urbervilles, BBC1, 9pm ~ In the penultimate part of this period drama, Angel and Tess are on their honeymoon when he decides it’s time for them to admit their former transgressions, but while she forgives his, he’s appalled by what his new wife tells him and heads off to Brazil to set up a farm there by himself. Typical man! She then finds a job on a bleak farm run by Groby and bumps into Alec, who claims he’s a changed man and proposes marriage. You go girl I say!
James May’s Big Ideas, BBC2, 9pm ~ Come Fly With Me: James May’s new series follows the Top Gear presenter as he searches the globe for the latest, most promising and often bizarre modes of transport. Tonight, he searches for the ultimate flying machine and finds the ‘Ekranoplan’, a craft capable of skimming above sea and ice at high speeds, as well as the world’s smallest helicopter, a rocket pack and a flying car capable of vertical take off. I think his buddy the Hamster gave them the idea for that one when he took off-road flying to the limits during his near fatal crash two years ago.
Agatha Christie’s Poirot, ITV1, 9pm ~ Third Girl: Hercule must put on his super spiffy thinking cap when a former nanny, Lavinia Seagram, is found soaked in blood. It’s believed that she’d recently turned to drink and drugs to commit suicide but it seems unlikely that that was the cause of her nasty demise. However, Poirot is soon on the scent of troubled heiress Norma Restarick, who has problems of her own – one of which is that she confesses to the possibility of murdering someone that very morning. Jemima Rooper and Zoe Wanamaker guest star.
Unsolved Crimes USA, Sky 3, 10pm ~ The Exploding Pizzaman: Despite the rather amusing title, this documentary looks at the bizarre case of pizza delivery man Brian Wells who was supposedly kidnapped in 2003 and forced by his captors to rob a bank. They placed a bomb around his neck as an incentive for him to do as they said and to keep the police at bay, but as TV cameras rolled, the device exploded live on air. See the consequences in this fascinating – but America-dramatic – documentary.
Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends, Dave, 10pm ~ Weird America – Porn: In this documentary from Louis Theroux, he investigates the world of the male porn performer. With his finely-honed physique and classy English accent, he doesn’t have to wait long before landing his first part, playing the all-important part of park ranger. Makes a change from a plumber I suppose! Funny stuff from Louis.
Jess: My New Face, BBC1, 10.20pm ~ Documentary focussing on 17-year-old Jess Lee, who was born with severe facial disfigurement, a symptom of a condition called Apert Syndrome. Unhappy with her face, she had major surgery which completely transformed the way she looks, but she still wants more. Jess goes on a journey to find out why she feels compelled to change her face and meets women who have different perceptions of beauty; from a model who hates being beautiful to a cosmetic surgery aficionado who believes good looks give you power.
That’s it for our recommended Sunday viewing – back to the grind tomorrow!
