What’s On TV Tonight ~ Tuesday 30th September
Can you believe we’re in October tomorrow? Only thirteen weeks ‘til Christmas! Feel free to have a nervous breakdown; I’m going to. In the meantime, the excellent TV scheduling for autumn continues tonight with the exception of a football shaped fly in the ointment as yet again, ITV1 gives over the primetime slot to the UEFA Champions League, Arsenal v Porto, 7.30pm – 10pm.
Fortunately, there are plenty of other programmes worth watching so let’s take a look at our recommendations for tonight’s telly…
Emmerdale, ITV1, 7pm ~ We kick off – pun intended – with a trip to Yorkshire where we find Zak and Eli taking Danielle to the train station, but smarmy Shane foils their plans when he searches their van and discovers her stash of drugs. Ross is struggling with his feelings for Donna when Chas offers to accompany him to the police fundraising ball, while Lily confides in Pearl about Peter’s money troubles.
Nigella Express, BBC2, 7pm ~ On the Run: Tonight, Nigella demonstrates super-fast ‘emergency recipes’ for people who are constantly on the go, including sesame noodle salad, and pea and pesto soup. A moveable feast is rustled up with the minimum of effort in the form of buttermilk chicken drumsticks, crunchy New Orleans coleslaw and Nigella’s chocolate and honeycomb bars. My solution to meals in a hurry consists of the local chippy or the microwave. I wonder why her coleslaw is called ‘New Orleans’? Does it flood regularly or sing blues/jazz? All will be revealed no doubt.
Highland Emergency, Five, 7.30pm ~ This excellent series takes us behind the scenes of the emergency services who cope with life and death situations in some of the country’s most inhospitable terrain. Tonight, during a marathon shift, the aircrew of HMS Gannet have to brave awful weather conditions to pick up a man with a dislocated knee on the island of Islay. Meanwhile, the team at RAF Lossiemouth must make a 150-mile journey to an oil rig support ship that’s out in the North Sea, where a rig worker is suspected of having had a heart attack.
Holby City, BBC1, 8pm ~ No Breaks on the Midnight Express – Part One: Tonight, the staff at Holby must put aside their differences and prepare to separate the conjoined twins. However, the press have found out that a man who’s been accused of child abuse is funding the operation so Jayne is forced to explain her decision to the board. Meanwhile, Maddy tells Kyla to forget her past and give in to the advances of her patient admirer. Concludes tomorrow.
The Sex Education Show, Channel 4, 8pm ~ Journalist Anna Richardson embarks on something of an emotional roller-coaster as she takes a fertility test and gets some shocking news. Also, she investigates claims that perfumes can attract the opposite sex and reveals the truth about some men’s lack of genital hygiene with the help of Long Ashton football team. *Shudders violently*
Sister Act, ITV2, 8pm ~ Her role in Ghost won Whoopi Goldberg an Oscar but it was this comedy that turned her into a huge Hollywood star and a household name. Whoopi – poor woman – plays the role of a Reno lounge singer who goes into a witness protection program after she witnesses lover Harvey Keitel killing a man. The police put her in the last place on earth anyone would look for the brash, gawdy singer; a convent. While she’s there, she tries to bring the nuns into the 20th century. Relying on some great songs and a superb cast – including Kathy Najimy as Sister Mary Patrick and Maggie Smith as the Mother Superior – this film makes the grade where it may not have done otherwise. Not the best film of all time but it’s better than football!
Losing It – Griff Rhys Jones on Anger, BBC2, 9pm ~ In tonight’s concluding episode, Griff looks for ways to prevent the build up of frustration; first, he visits a dietician then goes to a boxing club in Sheffield to vent his anger on a punch-bag. Later, he visits a relaxing meditation retreat at a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. With contributions tonight from Rory McGrath, Muriel Gray and Heston Blumenthal.
Jamie’s Ministry of Food, Channel 4, 9pm ~ It’s the start of a new series tonight in which chef with a mission Jamie Oliver sets out to help people improve their diets. Tonight, Jamie meets a woman from Rotherham who once fed her children burgers through the railings of their school’s playground. The press latched onto what she was doing and held her up as an example of where the nation’s parents are actively railing against government efforts to improve children’s health. Around that time, Jamie was on Top Gear and he called this lady words to the effect of a ‘fat scrubber’, so how’s he going to cope when she confronts him over his insult and can he make her change her unhealthy eating habits?
Deranged Killers, Discovery Home & Health, 9pm ~ Andrew Cunanan: This show does just what it says on the tin and tonight, detectives discuss the case of Andrew Cunanan who killed five men – including Gianni Versace – and then killed himself before investigators caught him.
Dawn Porter: Free Lover, Channel 4, 10pm ~ New four-part documentary series in which journalist Dawn Porter takes a look at the often extreme measures women will take to secure a loving relationship. In this first show, she investigates the concept of polyamory, in which partners freely engage in relationships with other people. Her investigation also takes her to a ‘free love’ school in San Diego and a sixties-style commune in Germany. The concept of polyamory is lost on me… why would you want several men to clean up after??
Ross Kemp Meets The Glue Kids of Kenya, Sky Two, 10pm ~ Four months after visiting Kenya on the trail of the Mungiki gang, Ross returns to the town of Eldoret, where an entire generation of children were left orphaned by political violence and spend their lives scavenging from rubbish dumps and engaging in solvent abuse. Hard hitting film which doesn’t pull its punches.
The Sixth Sense, ITV2, 10.30pm ~ This is one of my favourite films of all time. Writer/director M. Night Shyamalan brings this tale of the supernatural powers of a little boy to the screen in a very convincing – and scary – fashion. Cole is a young boy who sees dead people and they have a very annoying habit of showing up in all manner of grisly forms to seek out his help. He visits with a renowned child-psychologist – played by Bruce Willis – who tries to help him make some sense of what’s happening to him. It’s edge of your seat tense and full of gory bits that will have you looking at the telly through the gaps in your fingers!
Have a great Tuesday and we’ll see you tomorrow.
