What’s On TV Tonight ~ Wednesday 1st October
Well I don’t know what the weather might be doing where you are, but here in Derbyshire it’s windy, cold and miserable; which in fact is a relatively good description of the man I stood behind in a queue at Tesco this morning, but anyway, I shall be having an evening in with the fire on, a glass of vino and sole charge of the remote.
Here’s what’s on offer and it’s yet again a good night’s telly but my highlight is The Family at 9pm. It’s also Heroes night with no less than three shows on BBC2 to herald in the new series.
Let’s take a look at what else is on…
Heroes Coundown, BBC2, 7pm ~ As part of the countdown to the third series of Heroes which begins at 9pm, this special programme treats viewers to sneak peeks of the new series, behind the scenes footage and an introduction to new characters. Plus, interviews with stars of the show and celebrity fans attending the premiere party.
Emmerdale, ITV1, 7pm ~ Eli – whose one liners make this show worth watching – gets word that Danielle has been taken to London following her arrest and decides to track her down. Donna finds it hard to contain her jealousy after discovering Ross spent the night with Chas, and Lily is sent home early from the factory because of her arthritis.
Coronation Street, ITV1, 7.30pm ~ Liam and Carla worry about Tony’s motives when he invites them for a weekend away with Maria. Sounds like a Sound of Music remake but there’ll be little to sing about once Liam goes off with Tony! Meanwhile, Sally and Kevin discover Rosie’s lottery win after Darryl finds a letter addressed to her. Leanne tempts Dan with a share of her ill-gotten gains and Audrey tells Jason that Sarah may come back to Weatherfield.
The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards 2008, ITV1, 8pm ~ If you’re watching this, have a huge box of tissues at the ready as Carol Vorderman hosts the glittering annual awards from London’s West End. Some of the country’s biggest stars unite to salute the most remarkable people of the year - the nation’s unsung heroes. The celebrities include Prince Charles, Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Paul McCartney, Ant & Dec, David Beckham, Torvill and Dean, Dame Shirley Bassey, Kevin Spacey, Simon Cowell and Bill Nighy. Also honoured will be the UK athletes who won gold at the Olympics this year.
The Restaurant, BBC2, 8pm ~ In tonight’s show, chef Raymond Blanc tells the remaining couples to alter their menus to include the national cuisine of a foreign country, while maintaining their own ‘concept and identity’. While one couple add a South American kick to their British food, another takes ideas from Scandinavia to serve reindeer to their customers. However, the real test comes in cooking food from Raymond’s home country, France, but for one couple, this week is the last straw.
Supernanny, Channel 4, 8pm ~ Jo Frost is called to the Porter family home in Somerset, where nine-year-old Maddison is ruling the roost. Mum Hayley and dad Merrill are living in fear of the youngster’s explosive temper and the behaviour of seven-year-old Harry is adding to the parents’ problems. As Jim Royle might say, “naughty chair my a***, what they need is a bloody thick ear!”
The Family, Channel 4, 9pm ~ Yippee! Another look at the Hughes family life and tonight, Simon and Jane go out for the evening – those crazy kids – and leave their 19-year-old daughter Emily in charge of the house, but a fight breaks out when 14-year-old Tom refuses to adhere to his sister’s rules about going to bed on time. Will Simon shout tonight? More than likely. Will Jane back him up? I doubt it! Awesome viewing.
Heroes, BBC2, 9pm ~ The Second Coming: The new series kicks off tonight and moments after shots ring out, the identity of Nathan’s assassin – and the reasons why the Texas conference had to be cut short – are revealed. Peter and Matt are thrown into unexpected and uncharted territory, while Sylar decides a visit to Claire could give him a boost. Elsewhere, Hiro and Ando are charged with safeguarding a dangerous family secret and Suresh makes a breakthrough that could change the world. Episode two is at 10pm on BBC3 and BBC HD and Heroes Unmasked follows this episode.
Father Ted, More 4, 9pm ~ New Jack City: Father Ted is, in my opinion, one of the funniest series ever put on TV and it’s such a shame that Dermot Morgan died just as the series was gaining popularity but now, it’s achieved cult status and for die hard fans like me, you can never see the episodes too many times! Tonight, Jack is sent to St Clabbert’s Old Priests’ Home because of his horrendously hairy hands but his replacement is even worse than Father Jack and plays loud Jungle music at all hours and frightens Dougal witless. Ted and Dougal mount a rescue mission to get Jack back but it’s not going to be easy. Another episode follows this one.
Desperate Housewives, Channel 4, 10pm ~ Mother Said: In tonight’s visit to Wisteria Lane, a full-on war erupts between Bree and Edie, while Gabby and Carlos discover their new tenant has a dark secret and Susan’s mother-in-law Adele comes to visit.
Surviving, Sky Two, 10pm ~ Peter Sutcliffe: This four-part documentary series features people who survived attacks by serial killers. It begins tonight with the stories of women who survived encounters with the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, who terrorised women for more than five years in the 1970s. Each victim relives a terrible, life-changing encounter and describes how it is possible to overcome such an ordeal.
Numb3rs, ITV1, 10.35pm ~ The Running Man: Detective drama about a maths genius who’s recruited by the FBI to solve complex criminal cases. It’s like Carol Vordeman meets The Bill. Tonight, a DNA synthesiser with the ability to customise diseases is stolen from Charlie’s campus. Don’s fears it may have been an inside job and that it could be used to begin a bio-warfare programme.
So whatever you’re doing this Wednesday, have a great night and hey, let’s watch TV out there!
