What’s on TV Tonight ~ Wednesday 24th September
Tonight there’s a great telly line up which sees the second part of The Family and a whole host of other great shows including one of my favourite films, Walk The Line. So here are our top telly tips for Wednesday…
Emmerdale, ITV1, 7pm ~ In tonight’s episode, Matthew agrees to give Nicola a job, but only if she can drum up some new clients before the end of the day. Eli realises that getting rid of Danielle isn’t going to be easy and Ashley is alarmed when Laurel nods off during one of his sermons.
The Real ER, Discovery Home & Health, 7pm ~ If like me you’re into real-life medical dramas, then this show’s worth a look. Tonight we follow life in the busy A&E department at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham where doctors battle to save a factory worker’s hand after it was almost severed by a circular saw and a seven-year-old girl puts a brave face on her injuries after a playground accident. It can be gruesome at times but it’s a good insight into the UK’s emergency departments.
The Real Hustle Las Vegas, BBC3, 7pm ~ In the show that teaches us to be criminals and con artists, Alexis Conran, Paul Wilson and Jessica Clement visit Las Vegas to try out their scams in the gambling mecca. Tonight, the team steal the pot in a blackjack game, Jess uses her charm to win money in a game of pool and the team go to extreme lengths to show how easy we make it for pickpockets to steal from us.
Coronation Street, ITV1, 7.30pm ~ On the cobblers, sorry, cobbles, tonight, Rosie’s excited about attending the fashion awards with Tony but her excitement proves to be short-lived. Liz decides enough is enough and asks Clarissa for help in teaching Harry a lesson while Tyrone accepts Kev’s offer.
Sky Cops, BBC1, 8pm ~ Tooled Up: Jamie Theakston narrates and introduces this show which focuses on the work of the UK’s helicopter police. Tonight, the chopper team investigates a tip off about firearms in London and other officers investigate the shootings of several deer in a local park. Like the Real ER, this show is a good insight into what really goes on behind the scenes of UK police work.
The Bill, ITV1, 8pm ~ Appropriate Force: Well, if you watched Sky Cops, you can now see how very unrealistic The Bill is! I’ve never been a fan and the odd time or two that I’ve watched in recent years, I’ve not been tempted to become one. However, tonight, Rachel and Millie attend to a disturbance at a bank where a woman has attacked a security guard. An ugly burn on the woman’s arm and the smell of petrol around her leads officers to check out her house. When they arrive, they find her husband and two children bound, gagged and covered in petrol.
Supernanny, Channel 4, 8pm ~ Tonight is the start of a new series in which supernanny Jo Frost must sort out kids who behave like the spawn of satan. In tonight’s show, Jo’s called to the home of the Hancox-Smith family in Liverpool, where parents Jenny and Simon are overwhelmed by trying to control their three children.
The baby of the family literally demands breast milk and goes berserk if it’s not supplied while eight-year-old Cameron and five-year-old Flynn are both running rings around their parents.
It never ceases to amaze me how adults end up allowing these tiny children to rule not only their homes but often their entire lives! Madness!
The Family, Channel 4, 9pm ~ Tonight’s episode is the second instalment of this fly on the wall view of family life and we see that the Hughes family must deal with much the same trials and tribulations that families have dealt with since time began. Daughter Emily has taken a misguided bit of advice from her dad too far and got a job that her parents won’t approve of while Charlotte has been bunking off school causing Jane and Simon to have very different views of how to deal with it. I hope this week’s episode is as good as last week’s!
Walk The Line, Film Four, 9pm ~ This is one of my favourite films of all time. It chronicles the – albeit somewhat sanitised – life of the great Johnny Cash, played incredibly well by Joaquin Phoenix who not only has an amazing voice, he’s got all Johnny’s mannerisms down to a tee as well. Reece Witherspoon also stars as his long-term love June Carter and her vocals are astonishingly good too. To be honest, I enjoy her and Joaquin’s covers of many of Johnny and June’s songs more than the originals.
We see Johnny’s life from his deprived early childhood and hand-to-mouth existence under the – at times – tyrannical governance of his abusive, drunken father. We see Johnny starting out in music and his early first marriage which was doomed to failure when Johnny became a superstar. His heavy drug taking marred much of Johnny’s life and in this film, we see how he triumphed over his addictions to come back stronger than ever with his record breaking Fulsom Prison appearance and live album. Highly recommended viewing.
Britain’s Youngest Grannies, BBC2. 9pm ~ I remember seeing a comedy sketch about chavs in which one of the comedians presented his granny with a card that said, Congratulations On Your 30th Birthday and lo and behold, here’s a documentary that does in fact prove it’s no joke! In Britain today it’s becoming increasingly commonplace to find grandmothers who are in their thirties and this programme looks at the reasons for the emergence of a culture in which having children – when many of the mothers are barely out of childhood themselves – has spawned the ‘glamorous granny’ boom.
Desperate Housewives, Channel 4, 10pm ~ Opening Doors: The inhabitants of Wisteria Lane are tonight embroiled in as much overkill drama as always. Lynette discovers who started the fire at Rick’s restaurant but Tom refuses to believe her when she informs him. Susan reconnects with ex-husband Karl and finds that his life has changed dramatically while Katherine spies on Dylan and Bree begs Orson to give himself up.
Lost In Austen… Behind the Scenes, ITV3, 10pm ~ As this series ended tonight, you might be interested in this peek behind the camera that includes information about the location, the characters and has interviews with the cast. One quite amusing moment comes when Tom Riley is heard to say, “Between you and me, I’m wearing a thong to keep everything in place” Yeah, I hear ya Tom… I’m glad to see the back of this totally unbelievable series and I suspect that this backstage footage will be a lot more interesting than the up-front stuff!
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, UKTV Style, 10pm ~ The Sears Family: The super-happy, super-hyper Ty Pennington and his team come of the aid of Karen Sears in tonight’s show. She moved across country with her daughter Jhyrve – I don’t have a Scooby how to pronounce that – who required treatment for the rare blood disorder Krabbe’s disease. The two have been renting an apartment while still having to pay a mortgage on their other house and the financial strain has left no money for home improvements. Enter Ty and his equally super-happy helpers who spend thousands upon thousands on the makeovers for this show.
You’re guaranteed to need a box of tissues for this one; either to cry into or mop up the vomit with as it is all pretty corny stuff but nonetheless, what the team do to some of these houses is incredible.
Hope you have a grand Wednesday and I’ll be back tomorrow with all the info on Thursday’s telly line up.
