On the 23rd of April, Channel 4’s T4 Music strand brings viewers a documentary with a difference. From Simon Fuller’s production company, 19 Entertainment, this new seven-part series called What About Me? is a global search by Jamie Catto (founding member of Faithless) and Duncan Bridgeman (music producer). Together they are 1 Giant Leap, which is a multi-media concept band that aims to understand the complexities of human nature by bringing together the thoughts and compositions of musicians, actors, philosophers and writers from a range of cultural backgrounds and artistic disciplines. The finished product is the culmination of four years of work that forms part of a larger project that includes an album release and a film production.
The first episode is called Bombardment. It launches us straight into looking at the chaos and continual assault of the planet’s inescapable media machine. And then, upon looking within ourselves, we find the incessant chatter of our own minds is just as loud. With all this noise coming from outside and our inability to stop thinking, the episode asks whether it possible to find peace in the modern world.
Music in the first episode is provided by Michael Stipe (REM), Will Young and Maxi Jazz (Faithless). Talking on the episode’s topic of bombardment is a range of talent that includes Noam Chomsky, Tom Robbins and Eckhart Tolle amongst many others.
