What Not To Wear: 16 Year Old Lotte Salmon

What Not To Wear BBCMica Paris and Lisa Butcher help two very different teenage girls find their own styles and their zest for life, in tonight’s edition of What Not To Wear. Tackling the subject of teenagers for the first time, the show touches on themes that really resonate, from body issues and bullying to sexual awakening, media and peer pressure, boyfriends and low self-worth.

Aged 16, Lotte Salmon is 5ft 9ins and a size six. Despite having a figure to rival Kate Moss, Lotte is incredibly self-conscious about the way she looks. Dubbed a stick insect, and incorrectly accused of having an eating disorder, she endured a year of bullying about her weight before her parents were forced to move her to another school. But, with the damage already done, Lotte dresses defensively, often wearing baggy clothes and seldom leaving the comfort of her family home. Her transformation into a stunning and confident young woman proves to be an emotional and visual shock.

Eighteen-year-old Zoe’s quirky looks and personality also resulted in her being bullied, so much so that she resorted to self-harming. Refusing to spend money on clothes, her wardrobe is full of hand-me-downs and charity shop items, including a shell suit and a turtle neck from 1986! Yet, despite the dowdy dressing, Zoe dreams of becoming a burlesque dancer.

Zoe is determined to make a change before heading off to university, and Mica and Lisa create a unique style allowing her to express her personality, sexuality and her passion for burlesque dancing in a weird and wonderful, heartwarming personal journey.
