What’s On TV Tonight: 14th September
You may well need Sky+ tonight because there’s a great choice of programmes that clash. Those of us who don’t have Sky+ will just have to flick through +1 channels or catch up on various websites! So let’s take a look at our pick of the best of tonight’s TV…
Antiques Roadshow, BBC1, 7pm ~ Tonight’s roadshow comes from the Spencer family estate, Althorp and has one of those epic roadshow moments that I love where one hopeful antiquity owner gets a shocking, but nice, surprise.
A fabulous walnut desk has specialist Orlando Rock in seventh heaven and Lord Spencer discovers that his bronze bust of Napoleon might not be all it seems. Surprisingly, given that Diana, Princess of Wales is so intrinsically associated with Althorp, Diana memorabilia isn’t much in evidence, apart from two rare and precious items. Tune in tonight at 7pm to find out what they are.
Casualty, Farmead Menace – Part 2, BBC1, 8pm ~ Following on from last night’s explosive episode, tonight sees the ED staff finding disturbing video footage that explains Tess’s disappearance. Charlie heads up the search to find Tess but things quickly turn nasty on the Farmead estate where news of Sammy’s accident has spread.
In Charlie’s absence, Adam takes control of the department where the focus is on saving first Sammy’s life then Tess’s, but will the team be able to save them? I can’t wait to see this episode and even though it’s kinda cruel, I’m quite hoping Tess doesn’t make it; she’s so miserable all the time!
Heartbeat, You Never Can Tell, ITV1, 8pm ~ Tonight’s sixties rural drama sees an over-the-hill and terminally ill pop manager return to the village to marry his young starlet fiancé, Cathy Gee. However, when the groom is found dead, the local coppers suspect foul play, but who would murder an already dying man? Peggy experiences a sudden bout of amnesia when she’s caught red-handed with stolen goods and PC Wetherby’s son has something to report to Younger. It’s all happening back in the day isn’t it?
Tess of the D’Urbervilles, BBC 1, 9.00pm ~ I absolutely love period dramas so I’ll be tuning into this first episode of BBC’s adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel, starring Gemma Arterton.
The story revolves around the innocent and naive Tess – as you may have guessed from the title – who we see dancing happily on May Day with lots of other girls, all of whom are clothed in gorgeous period dresses. Tess is a carefree girl who doesn’t have a lot to worry about but that’s set to change when she gets involved with Alec, who’s played by Hans Matheson. The story follows his attempts to seduce Tess who’s torn between her heart and her obligation to obey not only her family’s rules, but those of the strict society of the time.
Massive, Creation of the Label, BBC3, 9pm ~ If you’re not a fan of period drama, chances are you’ll have skipped past Tess and Poirot – which is on ITV1 at 9pm – and so you may happen upon this new sitcom in which Johnny Vegas plays small-time crook, Tony. We first see Tony crawling on the floor into his son’s bedroom hoping to steal his wallet… as you do. However, when Tony’s son awakes, he finds out that his best mate Danny, played by Ralf Little, has inherited £10,000. The pair decide to set up a record company with the money and everyone, from Tony’s cider-soaked wife to the local estate agent, wants to be signed up.
I’m not a fan of Johnny Vegas but I am a fan of Ralf Little, so I’m torn as to whether to watch or not. However, I know for a fact I won’t be watching the next programme choice but my husband is bound to be!
Bring Back… Star Wars, Channel 4, 9.00pm ~ In this latest Bring Back special, Justin Lee Collins is on a mission to track down and reunite the cast of one of the most celebrated films of all time. JLC travels the length and breadth of the UK, New York and Los Angeles, to hunt out the original Star Wars trilogy actors including, amongst many others, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and David Prowse who played Darth Vader.
JLC sets out to not only reunite the cast but also to find out if there’s any truth to the rumours of on-set disasters during filming and bad feeling between cast members. Can he persuade any of them to attend the reunion? Tune in tonight to find out.
Phew… what a full night’s viewing! Maybe the ideal way to round it off is with our final and blood curdling programme choice…
Film: Mortuary, Zone Horror, 10.45pm ~ This savage zombie feature, by horror aficionado Tobe Hooper, follows the tale of a recently widowed woman, Leslie, as she moves her family into a small town mortuary where a malevolent evil lurks. Now, why anyone would move into a mortuary is a question that most normal folks would ask but you need to suspend your disbelief to watch this classic scare-yourself-witless film. It’s worth watching if only for a giggle.
